Benmiller Foresters have guest speaker
The Canadian Foresters' Lodge, Court
Benmiller No. 86 had a guest speaker, Mrs.
Joyce Doig at their regular meeting on Feb..
25, 1985. Mrs. Doig, a registered nurse, and
the Director of Nurses in the Clinton hospital
surgery unit spoke to thirty Foresters at the
Lodge in Benmiller.
Mrs. Doig's topic„ was "Bowel Cancer
Canadians have the highest rate of bowel
cancer in the world and our area isquite
high in the incidence of this disease. Mrs.
Doig indicated that this high incidence may
have to do with our diet. Mrs. Doig indicated
that if our diet would include more high fibre
foods the intestine would be more
thoroughly purged or cleaned out with each
bowel movement and less bowel cancer
would occur.
• Mrs. Doig showed the Foresters a fifteen
thousand dollar piece of equipment called a
colonoscope which isused for viewing the
condition of the bowel without requiring
surgery. Sampling tissue (biopsy) of the
bowel can be done at the same time. Areas
of problem in the bowel called polyps can be
identified and cauterized using the col-
onoscope.
The colonoscope measures approximately
5 feet long and is equipped with a fibre optic
light source. Images are transmitted
through the fibre optic lens •ana the doctor
doing the examination can discern whether
the bowel is healthy, or diseased and at what
location. Cancer in the bowel is •primarily
located in the last five feet of the bowel so
the colonoscope has proves# to be an ex-
cellent instrument for the detection of •
cancer. If surgery is necessary the exact
area to be repaired is identified before star-
ting the procedure..
If a patient has had surgery to- remove
cancer the colonoscope can be used at a
later time perhaps 6 months or a year later,
to check on the condition of the bowel.
Mrs. Doig indicated that any type of rectal
bleeding, or any changes in bowel
movements i,e. continued diarrhea or

continual constipation should be reported to
your family physician, particularly if there
have been family members who have had a
historyof bowel cancer. The Clinton hospital
is the only hospital in the area with this
piece of equipment and it is used by the local'
surgeons who cover the Goderich, Clinton
and Wingham areas. There is, a short
waiting time to have the test done. A patient
can usually return home from the hospital
the same day.
Mrs. • Doig said that the bowel check will
be uncomfortable for the patient at the time
but early detection of cancer and' early cure
greatly outweigh the pain and consequences
of death if nothing is done.
Therefore call your family doctor if you
have continued diarrhea, continued
constipation or any rectal bleeding and
follow his advice. The Canadian Foresters is
the only social group in the area that have
the goal of raising mbiney for cancer clinics
and projects done locally sponsored by the
Huron County Cancer Society. Money is also
donated by the Foresters . for • cancer
research. Supporting a Foresters function
means helping the fight against cancer, and
other community oriented projects.
