Ice flow finally breaks
The Maitland river threw large chunks of ice on
the golf course during a mild spell last week.

Only minor ice jams reported in watershed.
Despite the recent flooding in several
parts of Ontario there is no threat of the
Maitland river flooding, acccording to a
Maitland Valley Conservation Authority
spokesman.
There were a few minor ice jams reported
as the ice went out Feb. 24. The ice will be
continuing to flow, but there aren't any pro-
blems anticipated.
"Unless we get a significant amount of
rainfall, I don't think we will have anything
to worry about, but we still have a month or
so left , of winter," said Dave Grurnmett
spokesman for the Maitland Valley con-
servation authority.

CLINTON - Women Today members are
inviting the public to join them to celebrate
International Women's Day on Friday,
March 8 by coming to an open house at their
office.
"International Women's Day is a time to
celebrate the work and accomplishments of
women, as well as joining together with
other women to voice our common concerns
for issues that affect us all"- commented
• Valerie Bolton, spokesperson for the group.
Women Today have been an active group
promoting ' the status and awareness of
women in Huron County. The group has
established a support and educational net-
work for 1(romen so;)t ey may, affect social
change within the, community ,community toward a
more positive . and equal treatment of
women. The group has been in existence for
five years and has accomplished much for--:
a volunteer organization in that time.
Managed by a board of directors consisting
of eight county women, the organization is.
non-profit and opens its membership to
anyone, woman or man, who supports its
goals.
WoiTterioday has- much- to-eelebrate-on
this International Women's Day. They are
presently completing a project entitled
"Growing Together" which has
substantially developed the leadership skills
of their membership- Run mostly on
volunteer help, the group has lobbied for
childcare, been active promoting an
awareness of violence against women, and

meeting and working at the Clinton office.
"But most of our work takes place out in the
community - at meetings in members'
homes, at workshops •or by being active on
community projects sand research: ac-
tivities."
Women Today is'also celebrating a move
to a new office. For the past year they have
been in the basement at 52 Huron Street..
They are now moving up to the•third Root to.
a larger and more comfortable roam!
Those coming to the open house will be
welcomed by Women Today members, be
offered refreshments and information
material about the group and other county
services.
Of interest to many wil be their display
"`Working Women" which was prepared last
year for a career fair held by Conestoga Col-
lege. The display is composed of three
panels. The first is entitled "The Facts" and
gives - eight- -factual- statements about
women's participation in the paid labour
force, i.e. "52 percent of Canadian Women
are in the paid work force". -
The second panel entitled "Women's work
is Changing" displays photographs of Huron
County women -iii the workplace with
several quotes. For example, a picture of
Alex Stevenson, a Lucknow area lawyer is
quoted saying "Women's role ID
quoted saying "Women's in the Cana-
Fortn legal sercent of the 1983 first year w

class at the University of Windsor is com-
posed of women!"
The third panel is entitled "Valuing our
Work" and encourages people to look at
work not only for what we are paid but also
"our contribution, participation, and in-
teraction with our society". The statement
"Women's work has often been unpaid or
undervalued" is surrounded by children's
drawings of undervalued work - for example
"Driving people places and delivermg•
thiogs" and "Washing the dishes".
Two questions are asked in the display.

"This project will truly enable us to a
self-help network"- said Bolton. "As we
establish many smaller groups around
specific issues such as `making changes' or
`entering the paid workforce'."
Men and women are invited to attend the
open house from 2 - 8 p.m. on Friday, March
