SpeciaIneeds are being
met in Huron schools
din Febr-uaa'y--25, the -parent -teacher_ grqu
met at Colborne Central School to hear
superintendent, Paul Carroll, speak on the
delivery of special education services in the
County. It was learned that the Huron Coun-
ty Board will be ready to fully implement
Bill '82 in the 1985 school year when the
legislation comes into full force. Resource
teachers, residing in the county schools, are
already working with the classroom
teachers to assist in programming for
children with special needs.
Of the 10,111 children in the system, 648
have been designated as needing'such help,
be it for learning disabilities or physical
handicaps. The integration of handicapped ,
students has been a positive experience.
Most children can be 'mainstreamed', their
special learning , needs met with the
assistance of resource personnel. A fewer
number require a separate classroom en-
vironment and, for those whom the board
can not serve, services are purchased for
DRA W
FOR
other areas - such as the_Robarts School for
the Deaf in London:'-
Some significant strides have 'been realiz-
ed in recent years. Retarded young adults
are now, more appropriately, educated in
the high school environment with their
social peers. As a result of assistance in the
classroom, fewer young people are leaving
school because of low achievement and it's
resulting frustrations. Individualized atten-
tion will go a long way in ensuring that each
child can realize his/her own potential and
that, in the process, his sense of,.self-worth
will not be devastated by negative learning
experiences.
On March5,d Bill and Holly Keel of
Wingham will p ent the program "Street -
proofing Your Child" to begin at 8 p.m.
sharp at the school. We would urge all
parents to attend. Please note, because of
the nature of the presentation, no one under
the age of 16 will be admitted.
