Sewage rates will increase 25
cents April 1 to $5.75 a month
It's going to cost taxpayersin the town of
Goderich an extra a year in sewage
charges but some members of council
argued that the charge is unecessary.
Council passed bylaw 20 at its regular
meeting Monday authorizing the PUC to
collect an additional 25 cents per month
raising the residential fee to $5.75 per
month while industrial and commercial
users will pay $6.25.
Councillor Jim Searls argued that there
was "a principle involved" claiming the
increase was not needed to offset increas-
ed sewage costs. "The excess will go to
general administration," he argued. A mo-
tion to table the bylaw and refer it to the
works committee was tabled..

Carey said that excess amounts in the ac- •
count go to general administration to off-
set costs. "The fact is," Carey reasoned.
"the reserve is structured as a source to
draw on.. It's a backup: To alter that by
putting the excess in operating takes away
from reserves."
Searls argued that the town was taking
more money for sewers than was
necessary claiming operating expenses
totalled$201,000 -far the' pollution control
plant.
Councillor Bill Clifford said the question
of the reserve seemed to be an annual pro-
blem. He . explained that some buildings
are exempt from taxes and therefore an in-
crease in the mill rate would not affect
everyone. A hike in the sewage rates would
affect every building in town.
"There are costs for sewage
maintenance and construction in the
amount of $35,000 that is part of the sewage
operating costs," Clifford explained.
The situation could be summed up by the
"pay me now or pay me later" phrase
k
councillor Don Wheeler said. "TIe user
pay system is more fair in that itputs the
cost of sewage on those who use it air d\not

as beer supply dwindles in town
BY TODD MOWATT Ontario Liquor Control Board to allow

A beer drought in Goderich is imminent
as the beer supply is low and dwindling
and area taverns say they have enough
beer to last them until next week.
John McKeigan the manager of Mur-
phy's Landing told the. Signal Star that
they are out of draft beer and supplies are
running low in some of the more popular
brands.
"We will be okay for two or three weeks,
but I'm afraid it's .going to be a long one,
maybe as long as four to six weeks,"
McKeigan said

The Bedford Hotel located on The
Square is also a member of this organiza-
tion. Mary Lapain, owner of the establish-
ment said their supply is dwindling.
However, she did not give any indication
as to how long their beer supply will last.
She did say that she will be participating in
the Hotel Association's plan to bring beer
across the border.
"We will have to travel to London to get
the beer and it will cost approximately five
to six dollars more a case plus exchange,"
said Mrs. Lapaine.
• The Candlelight Lounge still has beer,
however they are running short on some
brands. Gus Balkouras, manager of ,the
tayern said his beer supply will last until
the -end -of -this -week, -or into the .beginning
of next.
"We stock over 15 different brands of
, beer so if we run out of one kind there is
always another," Mr.lkouras said.
Ernie's Roadhouse -manager Chris
Nebitts said he really' doesn't know how
long his beer supply will last.
"It just depends how fast people drink
it," Nebitts said.
The Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 109
is already facing a drought as far as beer
goes, says bartender, Brenda Brown.
The lockout by the three majo0
breweries in Ontario may prove to ' be a
test of a beer drinker's true grit.
