All your special deeds were greatly appreciate throughout Leah's il- lness. Jim and Bess Kelly and family.—O8 I hope the very cold spell which has hit Florida "with winds from Canada" is -eas- ing. Some of the fruit crop damage is not as heavy as expected. Whether the citrus growers saved .their crops by the tons and tons of water they sprayed on the fiwt isqueationabie. The heavy' use of water has' lowered the underground water table causing sink holes which have even taken sortie of the fruit trees. .. The lowered water table is very scary since in the, last year the rainfall has been light and now the streams, lakes and area wells have been dangerously lowered. Several counties are considering ways of conserving water. First, they're trying a voluntary cutback and if that doesn't work, rationing will be necessary. Sink holes have been located'with one just east of Tampa. Not far from there was a strawberry grower who said he was sorry for causing neighbors' wells to go dry but he had to try to save his crop. About 40 miles northeast of Tampa lies the high point of the Floridian aquifer whicir pressurizes and feeds the deep underground water sources in this area. For four decades or more, the level of the aquifer has been dropping alarmingly. We have been . mining water 'for agriculture, domestic and industrial use and there are more and more users all the time, hastening the depletion of this resource. We must stop. We have to have stricter laws and policies to keep the peninsulas of Florida liveable and not turn it into a desert. A geologist told the Associated Press that Iast week's new sinkholes were caused by' over -pumping. When you fly over the area, you're surprised to see all the round holes all around. This makes me think of one`time when I had the chance to fly over Goderich and outlying areas. I was so surprised to see so many gravel pits and gravel and swamp areas. It was interesting and beautiful. Try it sometime; you'll be glad you did. Love, Martha, P.S. Take care and look after each other. • • •
