your forehead and says "Remember that
you are dust and to dust you shall return."
There you} stay with a mark on your
forehead and a sentence yegistered in your
memory.. Thoughts begin to run through
your mind. He spoke the words to all the
other people but then the words really didn't
mean much. Now, being your turn, You feel
the intensity as the words are directed to
you and to you alone ... "dust you are and to
dust you shall return."
After pausing a few moments longer you
rise to your feet and return to your seat, or
maybe you rush out of the church because
you suddenly remember you were to meet
someone 10 minutes ago. And there you are,
running around town with.a smudge on your
forehead. No one bothers to ask why the
smudge; they too know it's Ash Wednesday.
And now it's evening, andjust before
retiring you go, as you usually do, to freshen
up. As you look in the mirror you see the
ashes again. You laugh to yourself thinking
how foolish you must have looked parading
around town with this very conspicuous
mark. A little embarrassed perhaps, but one
thing is certain; you cannot shake that
humbling yet cleansing phrase out of your.
memory.
"Ashes you are and to ashes you shall
return," is hardly an exalting phrase. I
,seriously doubt it would stir anyone to jump
for joy and click his heels. Then again,
that's not its intention.
When told I am "dust", my mind im-
mediately recalls the single ingredient God
used to create our race; that was dust from
the ground. From this I gather we should not
become an overconfident and presumptuous
people. We owe all we are and have to'Him
alone.
All will not last forever. The phrase "to

ashes you. shall return" rtw[lftiltds Mee
e
Death is the personal and inevitable destiny
for every member of the human race. Life
as we know it here 'on earth will not last
forever.
The source and the,unaioidable destinyof
the human family is sutxttned up in the
phrase a"ashes you are and to ashes YOU
shall rete t."`it's a phrase we hear on Ash
Wednesday; it's a phrase symbolized with
ashes on our foreheads, and it's.a thought
we carry through the forty days of Lent., The
phrase is humbling, to say the least; yet,
many love to hear it again and again
because it helps them clear their minds and
starts them on the way to understanding
what life is all about.
Lent extends the phrase "ashes you are
and to ashes you shall return" over a 40 day
period. It is a time when we contemplate the
thoughts of Ash Wednesday.. But Lent is
more than giving up empty.calories, televi-
sion and booze. It is a time when we
especially take unto ourselves the things
life-giving and eternal. As we fix our eyes on
Christ, those things are found.
In Christ, the God who suffered and died
in our place, we find Him who formed us out
of the dust of the earth. In Him we find the
God who says "Come unto me all you who
labor and are heavy laden, and I will give
you rest." In Christ we find the --God who
returned to the heavenly mansion to
prepare a place for us.
The message Lent has to offer us, then,
goes far beyond mere ashes. Lent would
have us come to grips with reality and see
man as he really is.
No wonder there is a brighter side to Lent.
Only when we are free from life are we able
to enjoy it. Smudged with ashes, we are
cleansed and refreshed as never before.
