Dear editor,
I am pleased to see we now have available
the services of The Alcohol Education
Program. I think this service is needed in
this area and I wish them every success in
the future. After 35 years of offering safety
courses in various conunimitieg; I feel I
•have had little success in this area. I have
been Unsuccessful in changing people's
attitude towards alcohol.
The mostadisappointing tate for me was
when I tried to set appointments with an
industrial 'safety organization and a chief
executive. I wanted to discuss various
aspects of safety with these people. I think
they checked my credentials and decided I
was not a V.I.P. because my plea for help
was ignored.
• It Was reported the union leaders and
program staff had a meeting recently. This
part of the work is very important and 1 am
sure this is a step in the right direction to
help alleviate problems regarding alcohol
abuse. It was decided at the meeting that
Goderich is not a heavy drinking area and
apparently we are no worse or better in the
• terms of its drinking problem than any other
small town in southwestern Ontario.
I cannot understand why. this is so
• important an issue. Does this mean that now
- we, know- other townfolk are supping• the
grog as much as we are it will make us feer
better or perhaps make us feel less guilty?
Unless we lead the life of a hermit I think we
should be aware we are in a crisis situation,
What ever

this problem is not a local one but a national
catastrophe.
To put the record straight, several years
ago it was reported that alcohol
consumption was veryhigh in the area.
Having lived in Goderich for 19 years I
have not seen any change in the residents'
habits regarding the amount of alcohol
consumed. In anycase ftwould be difficult
to know how much alcohol is being made in
homes. The union leaders spoke about any
help that is offered to the member is seen as
an invasion of privacy.
I don't think anyone really knows how
much misery and suffering has been. caused .
by the intoxicated. Thousands of lives have
been ruined. I know many readers can tell
horror stories about encounters with alcohol
and impaired persons. My family car has
been. smashed into on three different
occasions by intoxicated drivers. Those
people did not think twice about invading the
privacy of my family.,
I have been looking at the problems of the -

bill we have a lot of heavy drinkers in this
group. It is difficult to distinguish between
friend or foe, or right from wrong.
Recently we heard about seven teenagers
who were killed in an automobile accident.
They had been drinking.
We must all accept some responsibility for
these deaths because our society demands
we drink alcohol and our children are taught
it is right to drink -at every social occasibn.
But when our children get into trouble
because of alcohol we ask ourselves "Where
did we go wrong?"
We are like robots who have been a
programmed and it is almost impossible to
change our beliefs. In some societies
criminals' fingers are chopped 'off as
punishment. In this same society it is
forbidden to drink alcohol.
, Our beliefs.are instilled in us when we are
children and to change our beliefs is almost
impossible.
I was recently looking at my first
handbook of instruction, first printed in 1891
and revised in 1946, and as I flipped through
the pages I came across these words:
"Whomsoever you see in distress recognize
in him a fellow man." How can we help
someone when they do not realize they are in
- distress? - • - •
