African war in 1903 and used his skiffs to
develop an international organization to
teach leadership skills to boys. Baden-

Memories of the good times be had discover -
ng to live in harmony with nature.
Boys all over Britain responded to
Powell's scheme. He had no idea how many
boys were participating in the movement.
He tried to determine the number of boys by
holding a rally.
The rally was held at the Crystal Palace,
an exhibition building in London. Over
11,000 boys gathered and they were accom-
panied by a small group of girls calling
themselves Girl Scouts. On this day in 1909,
the modern-day jamboree was born as well
the beginning of the guiding movement.
Baden-Powell was everwheirried by the
support and he was especially delighted to
"see that girls were also interested in the
movement. He therefore persuaded his
sister Agnes to look into developing a
"scouting niovemehrfor girls.
Guiding caught on rapidly in London and
soon groups were forming around the world.
There is evidence of early guide groups spr-
inging up across Canada from Nova Scotia
to British Columbia. Records show that four
companies were registered in 1910 in Moose
Jaw, St. Catharines, Toronto and Winnipeg.
The guiding movement was further -
developed when Baden-Powell married
Olave Soames in 1912. Olave went on to be
named Chief Commissioner for the United
Kingdom in 1916 and went on to form the In-
ternational Guiding ConnciLin 1919,
The guide movement has gone from a
small group of girls wanting to join their
brothers in adventure to an international
movement,
Today, Girl Guides of Canada, with
275,000 members, represents the largest
organization for women and girls in the
country. World-wide, the organization has
over 8.5 minion members.

The former Chief Commissioner of Girl
Guides of Canada, Mrs. Victoria Clysdale,
was unable to deliver a speech to kick off the
75th anniversary of guiding celebrations on
Sunday, February 17 at St. George's
Anglican Church in Goderich.
Mrs. Clysdale and her driver started out
from St. Marys, but they decided to turn
back as the roads were icy and visibility was
poor -
The disappointment did not last long and
the service continued with one minor cor-
rcction. Ten -year-old Maureen Murphy
;gave her speech on the history of guiding.
She seemed a little apprehensive at first,
but once she was up in front of the
microphone, she delivered a well-prepared
and informatiVe speech. -
As people -were -leaving the church, one
lady commented,"The little girl's speech
was delightful and never before have I seen
such courage in a youngster:in
Maureen was not the only one to get up in '
front of the crowded church. Some read

VENTURERS
Venturers is a challenging program for
young men'and women, ages 14-17 and our
company meets bi-weekly. In the past
• month we had a ski day at the Pinery and a
toboggan party. We are planning a March
trip to Toronto, . with a day at the Sport-
smen's Show. We also play team sports
like floor hockey, basketball and enjoy
renting movies occasionally. We have
helped our sponsor by moving Church
pews. We assisted with Scout -Guide Sun-
day by ushering and participating in the
service following which we helped set
• tables and serve at the pancake brunch,
which was a fellowship event for the
Church's 150th Anniversary. Venturing is

the brownies and the guides conducting the

Despite Mrs.'Clysdale not attending, the

said that it was an event that happens once
