Union leaders, program staff discuss
drinking.. problems in the work place
On Wednesday evening, January 30, the
staff of the Alcohol Educational and
Counselling Program held a meeting with
Goderich union leaders to discuss the situa-
tion of problem drinking in the workplace
and how the unions and the program might
work together to help this situation.
The meeting was productive and the
discussions revealed that union leaders are
sincerely interested ..not only in their
membership but also in the community.
Several. important issues -were -raised -and
perhaps the most important was the

drinking area. In fact, Goderich is quite
typical of a small town in southwestern On-
tario and is no worse or better in terms of its
drinking problem than any other small town
in southwestern .Ontario. Goderich was
chosen as the site of the Alcohol Educational
and Counselling Program especially
because it was representative of small On-
tario communities. '
Another issue was the duration of the
counselling program: There was urlertain-
ty as to whether it is a temporary program
or whether the, service would be provided on
a continuous basis. The Alcohol Educational
and Counselling Program plans to continue
to offer its service in Goderich for as long as
there is a demand for it from the communi-
ty.

r.Uriion leaders recognized that heavy
inking can be the result of and/or the
cause of other problems and expressed a ge-
nuine concern for the problems of fellow
members in the workplace. , Discussion
followed on the type of, services available to
employees who are faced with problems
such as excessive drinking, stress, marital
breakdown or financial difficulties.
Union leaders pointed out that.'although
they may be aware of fellow members who
are experiencing difficulties, they are hesi-
tant to approach these members about their
problems because of the defensive attitude
often adopted by the members, Anyhelp
that is, offered is seen as an invasion . of
privacy. Yet, as union leaders, their con-
cern and interest is based on the possible ef-
fects on their members' long-term employ-
ment. Poor performance, excessive
.absenteeism or intoxication.op.r the-joll fight,.
affect promotion or could lead to dismissal.
The important issue of confidentiality was
raised in this context. The program em-
phasizes confidentiality. Its services involve
one-to-one, confidential and non -judgmental
counselling away from the workplace, for
individuals who would like to cut back and
.Control their drinking in 'order te, rcdne'e
some of the risks associated with heavy
drinking. The Alcohol Educational and
Counselling Program is located in Suite 202
of the Standard Trust Building.
Union leaders and program staff con-
sidered this meeting such a successful. ex-
change of ideas, that a follow-up meeting is
planned for the near future.
