Offers remedy
Dear editor,
As civil citizens just a bit relaxed from
holdups and stagnations of ale last postal
strike, the latest news is telling us now that
if bargaining does not go well we are in for
another mail strike.
That's for our information, just like that!
If the citizens of the land like it or not, it's
not important; if business is held up, it's not
important; if national communication is
badly reduced, it's not important and if
inter -national communication is lamed, it's
not important. Only if a new contract is to
the liking of union leaders then that's
important.
Personally, I do not think our rural mail
service men and women would endorse such
a strike. No holdups are to be expected in
rural areas and post offices and the last
storm made that clear.
I think this comes from the big offices and
city areas where the lump of mail material
comes through.
I am basing this on my observations of
decades. In the 60s, national mail delivery
took two or three ,days 'and overseas mail
three or four days. Now, in the 80s, nation-
wide delivery takes five or six days and
overseas mail 12 to 16 days despite
computers. Airplanes fly the mail overseas
in eight hours, to Europe and vice versa, so
something must be wrong here.
I propose a remedy for the problem -- -
E'fiXtrnen, including union leaders,
straighten up your act and start delivering
mail warm from the stamp!
2.And of that probablestrike-talk about a
contract but make sure you deserve it!

Cadets not
compulsory • "
Dear . _
To clarify a point in last week's write-up
about myself and the Goderich Police
Force. It never was "compulsory" in the
country (England) for anyone to join any
Cadet organization. This should have read
"at my particular school." Our headmaster,
an old decorated warrior, insisted; although
I cannot recall any of my age group who did
not relish the opportunity. We really were a
"bloodthirsty lot" in those days. I recall
making a mock Vickers gun out of an old
mangel and my chums and I watching for
the Germans to invade I would march miles
with theGreen Howards (stationed in Dover
before going to Norway) helping them dig
countless slit trenches around my town and
this was long before Dunkirk. Reflecting on
this later 1 think it was just to keep the
troops occupied (and crazy lads like me.
happy).
Yours truly,
Patrick D. King,

Can't understand concern over cruise missile
Dear editor,
I am very confused as to why seven doc-
tors in the immediate Goderich area are so
concerned over the U.S. testing of cruise
missiles over Canadian soil. After studying
their letter and not being able to figure out
Why they are so concerned, I decided to call
my good buddy Ronnie, collect, in
Washington. After chit chatting about im-
portant topics like Dr. Henry Morgentaler
and Richard Hatfield's acquittal, we got
down to plastic tacks. He assured me the
cruise wouldn't interfere • with reception of
television satellite dishes, in any way. I'm
glad my doctor had the presence of mind not
to sign that letter. If he had I would have had
to make an appointment, put him on his
couch, talk reassuringly • to him had
ar-
rt
prescribe mind and mood -altering phar-
maceuticals so he could get himself together
and see the light.
Really now doctors, get serious. The
cruise and much more advanced Star Wars
defence systems will turn into reality and
for all our sakes, and as a deterrent to the
ultimate destruction of mankind, certainly
should. In the meantime, if any of you
gentlemen would like to discuss the pros and
cons of this subject, I am not hard to find
and will fit each of you into my timetable at
your convenience. Then in about three
weeks you will receive something that will
horrify you, my bill. That's all I will say on
this matter because not like you, I am runn-
ing out of patience. -

Dear editor,
"The mountain has come to Mohammad."
It -to realize how -fortunate
the people of Goderich are in having the ser-
vices of The Alcohol Edacatiot Program. In
a way it seems that the mountain has come
to Mohammad. I work with the Department
of Psychiatry and I definitely believe that
there was and is a great need for a program -
like it and it is a first class professional ser-
vice. • •_

The greatest merit of Rich a program is

resources from its pa i vut ottice of foronto:,I
am told that the staff from Toronto is not on-

It would be a real tragedy if the nennie of

Value of b-tulding permits down
While the number of building permits '
issued in 1984 .rivaled the number issued
the previous year, the dollar value fell by
nearly $1 million.
In a report to council at its last January
session, building inspector Doug 'Har-
rison's report showed that the value of con-
truction in town was down by $1 million
compared to 1983.
There were nearly as many projects on
the go in town last year, 193 to be exact,
compared to 215total permits issued in
1983. The dollar value for 1983 was $3.1
million compared to almost $2.2 million for
1984.
