Ontario kinstnen provided the initial funds to establish the Kinsmen -CF Research Centre at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. The Kinsmen offer a memorial scholarship and competitive fellowship awards were established in 1970. A two-year respiratory fellowship was established at the Hospital for Sick Children and summer research programs are encouraged. In certain provinces, Kinsmen and Kinettes have provided funds to enable CF young people to attend summer camp wi,ate relmnitng thio !aaio*You grealMeld• There is no. eure Yet for cystic fibre* • and the treattreatrnent of the disease is extensive, in olving daily therapy, breathing exercises, antibiotics and mask therapy. The disease challenges not only the individual but the family involved and calls for great resolve and an indomitable spirit. Fortunately, with the generous help of Kinsmen and Kinette Clubs, victims of CF can lead an easier and perhaps, more normal style of life. But, the dedication to the cause must still be in the forefront and by participating in the Goderich club's annual ski and walk-a-thon Sunday, February 10 you will be supporting the work of research and medical teams who battle the disease. Registration for the ski and walk-a-thon will be at Suncoast Mall from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday and anyone not .participating but wishing to make a donation, may do so during that time. Pledge sheets fpr the event are available from Zehrs, Suncoast Mall, Garb and Gear, Shanahan's Foodland, Kirkeys, Becker's and local elementary schools. Prizes will be awarded to the hap pledge getters and the Kinette food booth will be on site with free refreshments for participants. Cross country -ski enthusiasts will follow the trail through the bush behind the mall while walkers will be given a route through the streets of thetown. If you are unable to participate, support a walker or skier and help thousands of children who suffer from cystic fibrosis • More than $50,000 needed for council pay and expenses in 1984 A report on the 1984 cost of council pay and expenses indicated that municipal government cost the town of Goderich over $50,000. Town administrator Larry McCabe prepared the summary for presentation to council at its last meeting of January. The summary indicates that councillor's Pay amounted to $45,000 in 1984 while ex- penses for conferences and seminars add- ed another $5,127 to the total. Of the remuneration total, Mayor Eileen Palmer earned $9,998 including $935 as chairman of the town's police commission and had - over -4,608 in expenses.- • • - • The remaining members of council • averaged annual salaries of $4,300 for council and committee Work while ex- penses for attendance at conference and seminars varied: The expenses incldued• Harry Worsell, $538; John Doherty, $1.146; Don Wheeler, $952; Jim Searls, $363; Jirn Britnell, $695 and Bob Cornish, $224. Coun- cillors Glen Carey and Bill Clifford did not attend any conferences or seminars. Expenses for the town's top ad- • ministrative staff amounted to almost• $5,000 combined. Administrator Larry Mc- Cabe was credited with $2,958 in expenses and commissioner of works, Ken Hunter, $2,032. Over $900 from that total related to expenses incurred on harbour related business.• The town's recreation einployeeS logged' - $2,000 in seminar and conference related expenses. Will pursue more BILD funds for work at airport The airport committee will recommend that town council apply for Board of In- dustrial Leadership and -Development MILD) funds for 1985.... ... • _ _ At its last regular meeting, committee members endorsed a motion calling for the town to apply for funds under the program to continue with improvements to the municipal airport. The committee has utilized funds in the past to pursue its master plan for the facility and is recommending that the ex- isting apron be extended td gravel grade at a cost of $25,000; that lot 8 be purchased from Business Air Services at $40,000; that Construction of a turning button on runway 10-28 be pursued at a cost of $15,000 and $5,000 for the purchase of the Morissey pro- perty. The committee learned that the 40 year- old engine in the snowblower blew a valve and piston and replacement parts are almost non-existant because .the company is out of business and that type of engine has not been in production for over 30 years. A snowblower has been rented for the balance of the winter season but a decision has not been made on whether to repair the existing machinery: Committee secretary Ken Hunter -guggested that, • since a snowblower will not be required until the winter of 1985-86, the committee budget to reserve for the repairs or the purchase of a ' new piece of machinery.
