(Shelley McPhee photo) Friendship House will provide support for victims of violence BY DAVE SYKES • The first step towards the establishment of the Survival Through Friendship House was initiated Monday when council passed an amending bylaw to permit the group home-- in residential areas :of the The amendment now clears. the way for the group's property committee to pursue - the purchase of a residence within the town of Goderich. They bylaw must be cir- culated and a public meeting willbe held concerning the property in question. • At a public meeting to discuss the groiip's application for a bylaw ainend- ment Monday, it was explained that the , transition house would be a place for mothers and their children, who are vic- tims of family-vio1ence,r1n -meet-for-emo- tional support, guidance, fellowship and also the teaching of some life skills and crafts will take place. - The Survival Through Friendship House, a project co-ordinated by the Synod of the Anglican Diocese of Huron, has. outgrown the basement facilities of Si. George's Church, and Laura Mullen of the board evlainect-lhere is—demonstrated need for the serivce'. "The project began'over a year ago to help women and children who are victims of family violence and for the past 14 mon- t we have met in St. Georges Church for ,cr4ts, fitness and speakers and the c en have babysitters and programs," sh explained. "In December there was 138 hours of volunteer labour and over $1100 in gifts and food from the county and citizens donated." There are as. many as 10 to 12 women taking advantages of the two weekly ses- sions but space has become a problem at the church and Mullen told the nieeting that "we need our own facility." The county's only crisis centre, first _ located near Bayfield and later in Vanastra, which housed victims of family violence for periods of up to six weeks was closed in the summer as the government PStablighPri network of 'safe homes.' r BADMINTON PINSO Reg. 19,99 KENNIX 3!2/21:99' - SOU 800 Rrg. 19.99 56.14 $1 385 These homes, providing temporary shelter for violence victims, are known only to police and presently 17 are located throughout Huron County. The Survival Through Friendship House is intended to operate mainly as a program cffi..D.t.te, _with bah daY and evrening, sessiow. offered, but it will be used to house victims on emergency situations only and for a maximum of three days organizers estimated. Many organizations, individuals and church groups have been responsible for the growth of the service over the past year. "We have been overwhelmed by the sup- port ofthe town and county and local chur- ches, "Mullen said. "It has helped us to continue and expand .this much-needed service." Mayor Eileen Palmer explained to the delegation at the public meeting that the zoning amendment would have to be cir- culated and that a "second public meeting is needed to deal with site specific." Huron County planner Malcolm McIn- tosh explained that one of the criteria for a group home -designation is that a demonstrated need exist within the ccim- munity for the service r provided by the home. June Taylor explained that while the majority of the users of the program may be from outside of Goderich, many, move to the community because funding and support services are here. Town council endorsed the bylaw authorizing the designation With two amendments. The home will be referred to as a transition house and office was added to the permitted list uses for the home. The planning advisory committee, which met before the council meeting, ex- pressed concern that the proposed home was within 300 metres of an existing group home. The town'splan suggests_that group _ homes for mentally retarded must be separated by 300, metres to avoid concen- tration. Commissioner of works Ken Hunter said this type of group home does not apply. •L Save 5 Ways.
