Harvey Maize, who passed away January 10,
God gave us a precious Grandfather
The clearest in the world
He fashioned his smile out of sunshine
And moulded his heart of pure gold.

So please God, take a message,
To our dear Grandfather up above,
Tell him that we miss him here
And give him oll'our love.

went, I get a lot of enquiries,; from people
who Would like to either start up a small
business, or have help for the one thit they
have.
In the past, very little financing has been
available for areas such as this, other than
banks from whom it is very difficult to ob-
tain funding.
For years, my colleagues and I have been
pressing for financial assistance in this area
for small business:
I am pleased to say that the Ministry of In-
dustry and Trade has just, come up with the
following program (H.E.L.P.) which I feel
will be of real interest to you:
• H.E.L.P: - HELP FOR
ENTREPRENEURS LOAN PROGRAM
What Is It?
To encourage small, new or expanding in-
dustrial companies and tourist
° establishments, the Ontario Development
Corporations will provide on a pilot basis -
three -stage H.E.L.P. (Help for En-
trepreneurs LoanProgram) loans. The total
of all stages will be a maximum of $50,000 Development Corporationswill take a look

normally a loan oi;-up to 4,000; stage two is
an additional $15,000 to finance growth
where first stage targets are achieved;
stage three is a final $30,000 for those Wh;Q
achieve targets set in stage two. ,
Do You Have To Start At
Stage One?
Proposals may be considered at- any
stage. For example U. financing required is.
between $5,000 and $15,O00 the application
will be considered to"°bbe at, stage two. If the
proposal meets stage two criteria, the corn-
pany could then continue to stage three
when it achieves stage two targets.
However, the maximum -loan at each of the
respective stages cannot be exceeded. In
this case , the applicant's maximuan .loan
would be $45,000 ($15,000 stage two plus
$30,000 Asage three) .
Loans are repayable following a one year
period during which . no interest will be
charged and no principal payments are .re-
quired. The repayment schedule will be
negotiated prior to the second year depen-
ding upon earnings, but the term will not
normaliy.exceed five.y,ears.. .
Interest will be charged at the Corpora-
tion's base rate in effect at time of loan
authorization.
Who May Apply? ,
All applications will be considered that
are in these sectors: secondary manufactur-
ing; a service to manufacturing; and tourist
establishments.
Business must be registered, have a clear-
ly defined and viable Idea -project with at-
tainable and measurable goals that will
create economic benefits for Ontario.
Where Do You Apply?
Applications will be reviewed by any
branch office of the Corporations. Residents
of Huron -Middlesex should contact either
John Harris or Joe Wood, at the Ontario
Development Corporation Suite 606, 6th
Floor. 195 Dufferin Avenue, London, On-
tario, N6A 1K7. Telephone No. 433-2871.
If you meet the" criteria, you will get an
answer within two days. Security for this
type of loan is limited to a promissory note,
thereby eliminating costly and lengthy legal
'proceedings and enabling fast funds
disbursement.

Did you have a problem in 1984 with corn
rootworm on your farm? In 1984 did you use
a rootworm insecticide, but still have a corn
rootworm problem? In 1984 did you grow
corn on a field that had corn in 1983, but your
past experiences dictated that insecticides
were not needed? Then did you watch
helplessly as that corn Lodged?
If you answered 'yes' to any of the above
questions, there is a meeting on January
30th that you should attend.
This corn rootworm meeting in Seaforth
will address all of the above situations.
In fact, this meeting will feature more
corn rootworm experts speaking in one day
at the same place than there has ever been
before in Ontario. If there is conflicting in-
formation, we will have all the people in one
room at the same time so you can hear the
discussion.

breakdown of insecticides. ' -
His research looked at how much of dif
ferent insecticides are'left eight weeks after
application. (Thatis, which insecticides
„
break down the. fastest). He also has
research that shows if a certain insecticide
is used on certain soil, under certain condi-
tions, then if this insecticide is used again on
the same field, its breakdown is speeded up.
The obvious question that arises is, if this
happens with one insecticide will it happen
with others. Are there soil pH or certain' -
soil. types where this is more apt to happen?
As well; it's nice to know which of the in-
secticides this has been proven to occur
with.
INSECTICIDES RATED
Ron Pitblado, from 'Ridgetown College,
will be another speaker. Ron will give a
summary of Ontario research to indicate
which of our present insecticides are doing
the best job. This type of information has
° been made public in the U.S. in previous
years. This will be the first time the Ontario
research wi13j present a summary of the in-
secticides, ranking them in order of
preference.
We know that the equipment you -use to ap-
ply insecticides istiotaccurate.
Henry Olechowski, of the Plant Industry
Branch, will talk about specific problems
with applicators and how to overcome these
problems.
This meeting will also feature talks on
other specific corn insect' problems. Karl
Bereza, an insect specialist with O.M.A.F.,
will talk about other corn insects including
potato stem'borer and cutworm.
Karl will also discuss one oToui' be -W -Gig---- ----
threats as farr.as corn insects. These are the
corn insects in storage.
When Karl Showed me the extent of this
problem in corn losses, it was Staggering ft --'---
was especially dramatic when Karl explain- •
ed some of the simple steps that could be
_:_.taken_t9_reduce this problem.
- U.S. EXPERT
The keynote speaker and the person who
is a real drawing card is Dr. Bergman from
the U.S. He is one of the many researchers
who are working on corn rootworm in the
U.S.
In Ontario we have a good research effort
looking at corn rootworm problems.
However, our effort is a "drop in" the
bucket" compared to the U.S. effort.
Dr. Bergman will relate to us differences
between our rootworm problems and theirs. i
He will talk about the northern, western and
comment on the southern corn rootworm.
In the U.S. they have done extensive
research on developing resistant hybrids,
looking at resistance to insecticides, rating '
insecticides, using insecticides at first
cultivation as, opposed to at plantingst look-
ngtat natural predators to corn rootworm, ,
controlling adults, treating first year coin,
using scouts to predict the need for an in-
secticide, as well as many- more related
topics.
All in all, it is'a meeting you should not
miss. This meeting is being sponsored by
Canadian Agra Consulting at P.O. Box 427,
Blyth, telephone 519-523-9249.
There is andrulssion being charged for
this meeting to over the cost of hall, lunch,
proceedings . . •14 er travel costs.
Any profits'(' oni t is rrleetin'g will be turn-
