two words the Ministry now has increased,
by an hour, timings when lights must be on.
This is m an effort to cut down on traffickaE-
cidents.
Driverauf motor vehicles are affected by
two recent changes in the Highway Traffic
Act. As of January 1, 1985 a driver must
report any accident or traffic collision
where the apparent damage exceeds $700.
This used to be $400.
I'he amount was raised because even a
very minor accident these days sees quite
an actual high cost for the necessary,
repairs. A driver still must report any acciL,
dent in which someone has been injured or
killed - the only change has been in the
amount of apparent property 'damage.
NOTE: this means damage of any kind, not
only to a vehicle.
Headlights on vehicles must now be swit-
ched on from one-half hour before sunset to
one-half hour after sunrise. Previously the
Act had read "one-half hour after sunset to
NOTE: Driver are still required to
switch their headlights on in foggy, rainy or
snowy weather. There are no changes in this
safety feature.
While on therstibject of headlights (which,
of Course, includes tail -lights) it is no good
just switching thein on if they are covered in
snow or mud. After a snowfall you should
clear the snow from both headlights and
tail -lights. Failure to do so could result in a
$53 -fine. The same applies to mud -covered
lights.
Now that snow is with us remember to en-
sure your windshield and side windows are
clear betooe you drive. Du nut ,04.4 scrape a
tiny peephole in the ice the' extra few
minutes taken to clear the windows and
windshield could prevent you getting into an
accident, where the delay would be longer
and costly. The fine is $53 but the injuries or
death resulting from failure to have a clear
view is more important.
A word regarding Speed limits. The
Highway Traffic Act states that the speed
limit in any municipality is 50 krn/hr unless
otherwise posted. It is not necessary to post
speed limit signs on any street to enforce the
50 km/hr limit (the signs at the entrance to
• town on the three highways are stifficipt).
Many drivers believe that the Suncoast
Drive extension (between Highways 21 and -
8) does not come within the 50 knilhr zone;
It does. The speed limit anywhere. in town
(other than the parks).is 50 km/hour.
Will examine policy of paying for drinks

• the municipality and placing a Christmas
•. • message in the paper when council met in
