Hospital considering

Would a helicopter transport service

These are two questions which. will be
grappled with by the property committee
of the Alexandra Marine and General
Hospital Board following a recom-
mendation to the hoard by the hospital's
medical advistory committee "that the
hospital actively pursue • funding for
construction of a heliport'.
At a recent hospital board meeting, it
was iearned that the Ontario Ministry of
Health has plans to station a helicopter
transport service at London. Presently,
the closest such service' to Goderich is
located in Toronto.
It was also learned that 100 per cent
funding is available from Ontario's
Ambulance Services Branch for the
construction of a heliport.
In a report to the board, Dr. Donald
Neal, President of the Medical Staff,

called the building of a heliport "an an-
ticipatory r move" and explained that
helicopters are an excellent and fast form
of transport for the critically ill and in-
jured.
When questioned as to why the hospital
needed a heliport when the town already
has an airport, Dr. Neal explained that the
time factor and disturbance to critically ill
or injured patients is just too great if they
must first be transported by ambulance to
the airport before being picked up by
helicopter.
Some hoard members expressed con-
cern about the location of a heliport
because all the areas near the hospital
would have trees and hydro wires in the
way. Dr. Neal explained that a large area
is not necessary for the construction of a
heliport which usually just consists of a
cement pad or in some cases just a cleared
area where portable lighting can be set up.
Following the discussion, the medical
staffs recommendation was referred to
the property committee which will report
it findings to the board later.

Anaesthetic
machines to
cost more
than estimated
The new anaesthetic equipment to be
purchased for Alexandra Marine and
General Hospital is going to cost about
$6,000 more than originally estimated.
At a recent hospital board meeting, Dr.
Donald Neal, President of the Medical
Staff, said that the doctors investigating
the major types of anaesthetic equipment
used on a trial basis at the hospital in the
last year had now come to a conclusion
about which machines would be best suited
to the hospital's needs. However, these
machines will cost more than $30,000 as
opposed to the $24,000 originally budgeted
for.
Dr. Neal recommended that both pieces
of the anaesthetic equipment required
should be bought at the same time for
consistency of operation. He said that
although the machines are very expensive,
they are "vitally important" to the
hospital and "will last for many years".
Dr. Neal said the new machines would
be CSA approved, making them very safe.
He said the doctors are still trying to
negotiate discounts and confirm quotes
from companies supplying the machines.
He explained that delivery would be in
March or April and funding could be
spaced over a two year period if
necessary.
Hospital board member Richard
Ottewell said, "It is disconcerting to be
given an estimate on equipment and then
find it is considerably more."
Of the $95,000 that the board had
designatedfor equipment purchases,
about $30,000 is left for the fiscal year
ending in March. Most of the major pieces
of equipment have been purchased. The
board had made a commitment of about
$24,000 last year for a major renewal of
anaesthetic equipment.
Because the equipment will now cost
more, the whole matter has been referred
to the finance committee for review.
