L'il Abner is an a
BY JOANNE BUCHANAN
L'il Abner, a comedy musical staged at
GDCI last week, was an ambitious
production to say the least. It featured a cast
of over 50 students, a bejfind-thesscenes
crew of over 30 students and teachers, and a
pit band of 11 musicians.
The larger the cast of any play, the
greater the opportunity for mistakes.
However, the Sunday afternoon version of
the play which I saw was a smooth running
affair. The coordination of acting, singing,
dancing and instrumentals took months of
hard work but the culmination of that work
paid off handsomely.
Based on the hillbilly characters created
m Al Capp's cartoon, L'il Abner is set in
Dogpatch U.S.A., a town which is about to be
blown off the face of the earth unless the
townsfolk can find one good reason for it to
remain in existence.
Cast in the lead roles of L'il Abner and
Daisy Mae were Jim Keller and Nisa Howe
who both sported strong singing voices. In
the play's subplot, Daisy Mae is determined
to marry L'il Abner and he, in turn, is just as
determined not to marry DaisyMae.
One of the stand -outs in the play was Lisa
Argyle as the feisty Mammy Yokum. A tiny
girl with a big voice, she showed lots of
spunk in her portrayal.
Paul Murphy as Senator Jack S.
Phogbound gave a good oration in the play,
speaking out well in a clear southern accent.
Jodi Kuran as Stupefyin' Jones didn't
have to say anything in her role but her walk
said it all—much to the delight of the
audience.
The muscle men—Brian Fitzsimmons,
John McGraw, Jeff Feagan, Andrew
Sumner, Ed Craig, Ray Vanstone, Dave
Weaver and Jamie Reynolds—just had to
stand there and be the strong, silent types.
However, their one line, spoken in unison,
brought a uproarious response from the
audience.
Besides the two main characters, major
roles were also undertaken by Murray Lane
as the villainous Earthquake McGoon,
Chuck Egener as Marryin' Sam, Steve
Barwick as Pappy Yokum, Darryl Wilson as
General Bullmoose, Kent Milburn as Dr.
Finsdale, Melaine Jeffery as Appaisonata
Von Climax, Mike Maurer as Available
Jones and Glen Feagan as Evil Eye Fleagle.
All are to be congratulated for their delivery
and timing.
The Dog Patch wives were en-
thusiastically played by Carol Ann Smyth,
Rhonda McMichael, Lisa White, Sandy
Lane, Susan Murphy and Vicki Pentland.
Their animated rendition of Put 'Em Back
was great. It was obvious that they were
enjoying themselves.
The secretaries—Erin Robinson, Kim
Langlois, Roxanne Kernighan and Robin
Wark—sang a short number entitled, What's
Good for General Bullmoose. Their har-
monizing was excellent.
The calypso style number, Oh, Happy
Day, sung by Mary Margaret Murphy, Julie
Meyers, Christine Stapleton, Lisa Frayne
and Kent Milburn, was a personal favorite
of mine from the play. Jubilation T. Corn -
pone was another toe tapper which stuck in
the memory long after the play had ended.
The pit band led by Al Mullin, direction by
Philip McMillan and choreography by Ellen
Murphy and Barbara Ellen MacLeod all
added to the success of the play. Colorful
costumes and set decoration gave an overall
bitious musical

tone of lightheartedness.
While lack of space makes it impossible to
give individual mention to each and every
person involved in the play, they know who
they are and can be proud of a job well done.
Audiences who saw L'il Abner will no
doubt look forward to another fine GDCI
production next year.

Argyle) elicits a confession of intended murder from General

Rotarians told Lotteries' benefits
Over $L5 million worth of major prizes
were awarded to people in the Goderich
area last year by the Ontario Lottery Cor-
poration. But more importantly, the
Goderich area has also received over three-
quarters of a million dollars in Wintario
grant money since April of 1992.
This point was driven home to Goderich
Rotary Club members Tuesday by guest
speakers., John ,MacNabb and Karen Ogden
of the Ontario Lottery Corporation.
The topic of their slide ptaesentation and
talk was "Lotteries: Bottom Line Benefits
to Ontario Business.,,
Lotteries were first introduced to the
province in 1975 with ane game, Wintario,
being operated every two weeks. The
Ontario Lottery Corporation now ad-
ministers five games: Wintario, Lottario,
Provincial, Super Loto and Lotto 6.49.
While the Corporation reports to the
Minister of Tourism and Recreation, it
actually operates just like any other
business, MacNabb explained to the
Rotarians
"in our last fiscal year, the Corporation
earned a record $163 million in profit That's
3.8 per Bent higher than the previous year
and brings total profits earned to $1166
million in eight years," he said. "Our profits
are retarded to benefit the province's
shareholders, which are in fact, its
residents, and these profits are earmarked
for sports, culture, recreation, health and
environmentally -related health research
projects and province -wide social service
agencies."
MacNabb pointed out that every aspect of
the lottery operation creates a rippling
ect that can be felt in a variety of ways
throughout Ontario's economy.
Last fiscal year, $294 million was
distributed to individuals as prizes. That
represents 53 per cent of the Corporation's
total revenue. But no matter what the prize,
much of the lottery prize money is adually
