Dear Editor:
I am writing> response to Mr. Fred
Salter's letter.`Dec. 7/83.
I would like to point out that it is not
ministry policyto stock salmon in Lake
Huron or Georgian Bay. It has been pointed
out by UM staff that they do not know what
ldnd of a beast they have turned loose in
past plantings of those fish in the Great
Lakes.
The ministry does not know what their
diet consists of, whether it be smelt, perch,
pickerel or any other fish that happen in
their way. So the plantings have been stop-
ped until further tests are complete.
Salter also states there are 30 to 50 boats a
day out fishing four or five miles off
Goderich. I fish out there every day, 10 mon-
ths a year and I have never seen over three
or four.
Salter claims to be a sports fisherman. I
find this hard to believe when he gets paid to
take people out to catch fish. (I call this
commercial fishing) but he does hide behind
a blanket of anglers and acts as the presi-
dent of an anglers association.
The commercial fisherman keeps a daily
record of all fish caught and the location and
type of gear used. This report must be sent
the MNR each month or the fisherman is fin-
ed and could lose his licence to fish.
Salter, on the other hand, can pick his
figure out of his hat and say fifty boats
caught 200 fish and filled all the tourist
camps.
LFTTERS
The commercial fisheries along Lake
Huron contribute quite heavily to the local
economies of the ports of Goderich and
Bayfield and we also supply quite a number
of jobs. I alone employ six people.
We create new money from a natural
resource that belongs to all the people in the
province, not just a few sportsmen.
Eighty percent of the people in the pro-
vince do not sport fish and they rely on us for
their fish. Just like they rely on farmers for
meat, poultry and eggs.
If people like Salter have their way there
may not be any perch, pickerel or trout or
any other native species left after the
salmon have destroyed them.
So why stock a fish that only a few people
want and at taxpayer's expense to ruin the
already thriving fish population that is in
the lake now.
I know many tourists that fill the local
camps, cottages and trailer parks who do
not fish and these people will keep coming to
our communities without salmon being
planted as they have in the past.

Student looking for info
Dear Editor,
Hello, my name is Terri Radsick and I'm
a 7th grader at Clyde Jr. High School in
Clyde, Ohio, U.S.A.
We are studying about your country and
my teacher felt that doing reports on certain
communities would be a good way to learn
about Canada and its people.
I've been assigned to do a report on the
province of Ontario, particularly the town of
Goderich and was wondering if you could

Christmas lights stolen
Dear Editor,
We recently bought the property on the
corner of Wellington Street and Britannia
Road, and as the Christmas season ap-
proached, I decorated the stair railing and
shrubs at the front of the house with
Christmas lights. We received many com-
pliments for brightening up the corner, as
this had previously been a vacant house.
On Saturday night some persons took
every light bulb. Now if they were taken by
some poor person whose situation is so bad
they could not afford bulbs, then I can easily
forgive and wish them a happier, brighter
Christmas.
However, if they were stolen, just for a
lark, T hope those responsible will put the
bulbs back. No questions asked. If you have
a conscience, please return the bulbs, then
you too may have a happy Christmas.
You see, I can remember as one child in a
family of eight, when my gift was some can-
dy, an orange, and something for school,
like a ruler, pencil or crayons. But we were
taught not to take anything that did not
belong to us.
Sincerely,
Esther Blackwell
