The Goderich Novice A team travelled to
Strathroy to participate in the Early Bird
Tournament over the weekend of November
26. The team made it to the consolation final
but lost 5-3 to Thamesford.
Goderich was not in top form during the
first game of the tournament when they
faced -off against Byron. The locals were
blown off the ice, losing by a 12-0 score. They
had opportunities to score while Byron was
shorthanded but could not find an opening
behind their opponents goalie.
Having the opportunity to play a second
game payed off for them as they;
squeaked by Forest 3-2.
Goderich opened the scoring with a goal
by Bryan Hodges midway through the first
period, giving some confidence back to the
team. Andrew Scott was credited with the
assist. Forest managed to tie the score with
less than two minutes left to play in the first
period, but Hodges and Jeff Rau connected
to score with only 42 seconds remaining,
giving Goderich a 2-1 lead.
Forest held Goderich scoreless during the
second period and managed to tie the score,
but the local team kept battling as Hodges
netted an unassisted goal to give him three
for the game and advance his team to the
consolation final.
Consolation Final
Goderich played a catch-up game of
hockey when they met Thamesford in the
consolation final, losing 5-3.
The Novices were held scoreless during
the first period but allowed the puck to go in
their own net twice. David Boyce scored
Goderich's first goal to bring his team
within one, but Thamesford slide the puck
into the Goderich net seconds later.
Jason Lajeunesse opened the scoring.in
the third period when he took a pass from
Drew Macaulay and put the puck behind
Thamesford's goalie. Jason Hayter scored
an unassisted goal to tie the game at three
all, but the Goderich team could not hold on
as they allowed two goals in the final two
minutes of play, causing them to lose the
consolation final 5-3.
Regular Action
In the Shamrock league, the Goderich
Novices went down to a 3-1 defeat on hoine-
ice when they met St. Marys on Saturday,
and a 6-4 defeat when they travelled to
Exeter.
St. Marys first goal was scored on a fluke
shot from the blue line that trickled past
Goderich's goalie in the opening seconds of
the game. Goderich came back to even the
score when Jason Hayter took control of the
puck at centre ice, did some fancy stick
handling to get past three St. Marys
defenders and raise the puck over the
goalie's shoulder.
St. Marys came back in the second period
to score two quick goals, taking the lead 3-1.
Both teams were held scoreless throughout
the third period, giving St. Marys victory in
the first meeting between the two teams.
Exeter 6 - Goderich 4
Exeter has emerged victorious from both
of their meetings with Goderich. The first
game was a close 5-4 win for Exeter and the
second meeting, on Sunday, ended 6-4 in
their favour.
With home -ice advantage, Exeter scored
one in the first period and another two in the
second before Goderich's Jason Hayter
brought his team to life. Bryan Lamb was
credited with the assist.
A total of six goals were scored in the third
period. Exeter scored the first one followed
by Jeff Rau's goal. Exeter came right back
with another goal of their own and then
Hayter netted two in a row for Goderich,
giving him a three goal night. Bryan Hodges
earned the assist on Rau's goal and Bryan
Lamb was awarded an assist'-orr-one of
Hayter's goals.
The final goal of the game was scored at
2:32 by Exeter, giving them a 6-4 win.
Pee Wees defeat Parkhill and Ilderton
On' Friday, December 2, The Goderich
Lions Pee Wees travelled to Parkhill and
defeated the host team. The local lads were
slow to start but the astute goaltending of
Shawn Currie encouraged the skaters and a
final score of 7-2 was realized. Andre Cauchi
sparked the attack with three goals and two
assists while left wing linemate Chris
O'Neill added one goal and three assists and
right winger Jeff Hodge added one goal and
two assists. Another goal was added by
George Sideris assisted by Greg Alcock and
Rob Dempsey. Brian Lane, assisted by
George Sideris, completed the scoring
drive.
Lonnie Rumig played a very strong game
on defense and disrupted numerous Parkhill
scoring attempts.
Shawn Currie in goal had his strongest
outing of the year.
on Saturday, December 3 the Lions
played host to Ilderton and proved most
ungracious by defeating their guests by a
score of 11-2. The local attack was led by
George Sideris with four goals, Tim Har-
rison tallied three times and added two
assists, Greg Alcock added one goal and two
assists. Brian Lane had one goal and one
assist, while Shawn Talbot added one goal
and one assist and Chris O'Neill one goal.
Jeff Boyce, Andre Cauchi and Greg
Dewinter added two assists each, while Jeff
Hodge had a single. Pat Donnelly capably
handled the net -minding duties and foiled a
number of Ilderton scoring chances.
The local Pee Wees have been gaining
momentum in the past couple of weeks and
face the Strathroy team at the local arena
next Saturday.
Atoms defeat Exeter 9-6 Sunday
Two well played games helped the
Goderich Atom team boost their record to
two wins, seven losses and three ties. On
Saturday the local team played host to St.
Marys and came away with a 2-2 tie.' On
Sunday they travelled to Exeter and came
home with a 9-6 victory.
Aaron Duckworth opened the scoring
when he took a pass from Paul Hamilton to
jump to a quick 1-0 lead. Mark Philips was
also credited with the assist.
Early in the second period, Duckworth
feed Hamilton the puck to give Goderich a

Goderich could not hold the St. Marys
attackers off in the opening minutes of the
third period as the visiting team put the
puck past the Goderich netminder to tie the
game.
In Exeter, Goderich took an early lead
with an unassisted goal by Paul Hamilton,
but Exeter evened the score minutes later,
and then went ahead 2-1. Goderich's Aaron
Duckworth took a pass from Hamilton,
followed by an unassisted goal by Sean
O'Brien.
With only 56 seconds left to play in the first
period, Exeter put another goal on the
scoreboard to tie the game at three all, but
Goderich had the last say in the period as
Jeff Beange scored to end the period with a
4-3 score in favour of Goderich.
Goderich came out fighting in the second
period with Beange scoring two more goals,
giving him his third for the evening. One of
his goals was unassisted and the other goal
was assisted by Chris Erb. Corey Adams
slide the puck into Exeter's net moments
later giving him an unassisted goal also.
With only seconds remaining in the second
period, Ryan Fagan scored to give Goderich
an 8-3 lead.
It was Exeter who made it on the
scoreboard first in the third period, after
being shutout in the second, but Goderich
quickly followed with an unassisted goal by
Sean O'Brien. Exeter did not give up as they
scored a goal right after O'Brien's and
another one with only 32 seconds, but their
last minute efforts were all in vain as
Goderich headed home with a 9-6 win.
The Atoms next game is on Saturday when
they play host to Exeter. Goderich has
defeated Exeter in both of their matches this
season.

The Western Region Public Schools held
their annual volleyball tournament last
Wednesday in Goderich. The boys played at
Victoria School while the girls volleyed for
the championship at Robertson.
The grade four to six students came from
Brookside, Colborne, Robertson, Victoria
and Hohnesville Schools.
Finishing in first place for the boys'
division was Hohnesville, but due to a
shortage of time, they could not determine a
second place finisher. Victoria took the
girls' championship with Colborne's girls
winning the consolation title.
GDCI girls finish season
BY TD
The GDCI girls' basketball teams came to
the end of their season last week. The Senior
Vikings were defeated 53 - 40 by London
Westminster in a challenge match to
determine entry into the WOSSA cham-
pionships and the junior Vikings were
eliminated in the WOSSA quarter finals 93 -
18 by powerful Sarnia St. Pat's.
The senior Vikings played well in the early
part of their game Tuesday at Westminster,
leading 8 - 2 in the first quarter. The Vikings
then missed three straight breakaway
layups allowing Westminster to stay in the
game. Goderich led 8 - 4 after the first
quarter but by half-time the Wildcats of
Westminster held a 23-16 edge.
The Vikings pulled to within four points
of Westminster in the fourth quarter with
two minutes left in the game, but with time
running out, the Vikings were forced to foul
to try to get the ball. Westminster players
made the free throws to pad their lead.
Kim Fritzley had 19 points to lead the
Viking 'attack. Cathy Gallow and Mary
O'Neill added six points apiece, Anne Allan
had four, Allison Graham got three and
Christine Stapleton had two points.
Coach Phil Bugler's Vikings had a fine
season with an overall record of 29 -10. The
Vikings lost only two of their starters and
seven of the ten players on this year's team
will be returning next season. This, along
with the good crop of rookies moving up
from this year's junior Vikings, gives coach
Bugler another promising season next year.
The junior Vikings, who won the Huron
Perth championship were unable to contain
the explosive Sarnia St. Pat's team. Playing
without two starters and trying to overcome
the effects of a two week layoff because of
exams, coach Lynn Meyer's Vikings were
no match for the Fighting Irish who went on
to win the WOSSA championship, defeating
Sarnia Northern 64 - 28.
Jenny Allen, with six points, topped the
Viking attack. Shelly Teal had four points,
Sarah Alexander and Katharine Muphy had
three apiece and Mary Catherine Stapleton
had two points.
Goderich Bantams gave it
their all at Clinton tourney
BY C.B.
What might be classed as a hectic
weekend of hockey, the Goderich (Elevator)
Bantams continued in their Clinton tour-
nament on December 3 and 4. On the
strength of their wins against Preston and
Petrolia the weekend before, they entered
the second phase Saturday afternoon
against St. Clair Beach. The boys played
tremendous hockey winning 4 - 3.
Mark Burbine opened the scoring for
Goderich three minutes into the first period
assisted by Ian MacKinnon. St. Clair Beach
evened it up before the period ended.
The second period had barely begun when
Byron Bowman made it 2 - 1 for the locals,
Scott Garrow and Mark Burbine drew
assists. St. Clair Beach again tied the score
and play was end to end. Then Scott Garrow
picked up a leading pass from Rod Nurse,
fought off two opposing players deeked the
goalie and popped it in the top corner of the
net.

In the third period Dave Duncan scored
Goderich's fourth goal assisted by Darrell
Durnin. St. Clair Beach scored their third
goal and tension mounted. St. Clair Beach
then started to really pour it on but the
Goderich boys kept checking and breaking
up plays until time ran out. Unfortunately
for the Goderich team they lost the services
of Scott Garrow who received a serious
concussion from being severely checked
into the boards.
Because of the design of the tournament
Goderich's next opponent turned out to be
St. Clair Beach again on Sunday morning. If
the boys had won this second game they
would have had it all. However, such was
not the case as they dropped the decision 2 -
1.
The boys fought hard in the tense filled
confrontation but just couldn't get any
breaks. All scoring was in the first period.
Darrell Durnin scored for Goderich with
assist going to Rod Nurse and Dave Duncan.
St. Clair Beach came back with two goals
within seconds of each other -before the
period ended.
In the remaining two periods Goderich
just couldn't buy a goal but they refused to
yield any more either.
At this point complications set in. Gratitude and thanks are extended from
Goderich was due to play a regular league coach Wilkinson to the following players
game in Parkhill at 3:30 p.m. Faced with from the "B" team who played like veterans
this eventuality coach Wilkinson hid and made the win in Parkhill possible: Gary
decided on the Saturday that he would send Erb, Mark Cauch;, Bob Allen, and Darren
part of his team to Parkhill fortified with' Stanbury•
some players from the Bantam "B" team
and that is what took place. The bus picked
up the "B" players in Goderich, drove to
Clinton, picked up the "A" players going to
Parkhill and took off. The boys from the "A"
team had remained in their equipment.
In the game at Parkhill the locals were
victorious. Playing with only two lines,
some of them very tired boys, they defeated
Parkhill 4 - 3. The first period was scoreless.
In the second period Shawn Larder opened
the scoring with assists to Gary Erb and
Dave Duncan. Parkhill came back with two
goals before the period ended.
Goderich scored three times in the third
period. Dave Duncan scored the first
assisted by Mark Burbine and Shawn
Larder. Mark Burbine scored the second
when he took a slapshot from his own goal
line that travelled the full length of the ice
and into the Parkhill net. There was a very
short silence before the roar of the crowd
became deafening. Darren Stanbury ("B"
player) added a clincher with assists going
to Shawn Larder and Mark Burbine.
Parkhill added their third goal and pulled
their goalie in an attempt for a tie. Goderich
fought them off and nearly scored into an
empty net.
Still in their equipment, the boys jumped
back on the bus for their dash back to
Clinton to play at 6 p.m. against St. Clair
Beach again. They made it with 15 minutes
to spare. However, their efforts were in
vain. In the third and final game Goderich
lost 7 - 0. The strain of playing three games
in such a short space of time was just too
much. The boys had lost their edge, and in
addition to Scott Garrow being out, Ian
MacKinnon had injured his ankle in
Parkhill and couldnt play the crucial game.
St. Clair Beach was an excellent team
from an "A" division, Goderich is classed in
a lower category as "BB", but they were not
seven goals better.
The Goderich boys played as a team
giving their best, and there was much
honour in defeat. If they continue to perform
as they did in the tournament, they will be a
team to be reckoned with in their own
league, and providers of some excellent
entertainment to those who come to support
them at the local arena.
Bedford Flyers hang on to
first place in Rec. hockey
A three goal effort by Kevin Meriam
helped lead Sunset to a 10-4 romp over
Hodges during a game played on November
27. Tom Shiflett was the high scorer for
Hodges with two goals.
On the following Monday evening, Bed-
ford defeated Clere-Vu 6-2. Ron Corriveau,
Mark Frayne and Phil Paquette added
singles towards the Bedford win.
On Wednesday Bedford and Sunset played
to a 3-3 tie. Bedford took an early 2-0 lead
with goals by Joe Trebish and Phil
Paquette. Then Sunset came back with
three unanswered goals, two by Kevin
M'eriam, while Steve Arbour added the
single. Mark Frayne netted the tying goal
for the Flyers.
Clere-Vu bombed Ultramar 10-4 in Clinton
on Thursday evening. Bill Crawford had
four goals and added an assist to lead all
scorers. The Rockets played again in
Clinton on simony but could not handle
Green Machine as they were beaten 10-7 by
the Machine. Dave Groff scored four times
and Bill Lewis had a hat -trick to lead Green
Machine's offensive attack.
In Goderich on Sunday morning,
Ultramar out scored O'Briens 10-6. Paul
Kelly and Rick McLean scored two apiece

beek, Ian McAdam, George Godin, Graham
