The Suncoast Craft Corner is a little low on stock right now, but Naida McClinchey hopes to
get all of the crafts and magazines in very shortly. The clocks pictured above are made by a
local resident. ( photo by Anne Narejko)
Craft store opens in time
for Christmas shoppers
BY ANNE NAREJKO
There once was a time when people would
make the gifts they gave at Christmas in-
stead of going to the local store and picking
something off the shelf. For those who still
like to give the gifts made with loving hands,
a new craft shop has opened in Goderich at
the Suncoast Mall.
The Craft Corner is run by Naida
McClinchey with the help of Janice Young.
McClinchey was the owner of the Benmiller
General Store for six years.
Since McClinchey and Young were in-
terested in crafts and knitting, they thought
they would like to open a store together. To
find out exactly what they wanted to do with
a craft store, they made a trip to Toronto to
see what the shops there had to offer, talk to
suppliers and see some workshops.
What the two ladies decided on was
carrying a large variety of crafts, yarn and
magazines.
"Right now we don't have a lot of stock,
but eventually we hope to carry a full line of
crafts and magazines. We will be carrying
BUSINESS
BEAT
magazines for men as well," explained
McClinchey.
Corner Craft will be carrying Lewiscraft
crafts and Bernat yarn. McClinchey thinks
that they are the only store in this area to
carry those lines.
Right now the store has some Christmas
items that have been made by local people.
The items include clocks, quilts, and a large
chocolate display of cartoon character
suckers and houses. Long term plans for
the store also include demonstrations.
"We've been toying with the idea of
having classes for different crafts," com-
mented McClinchey.
For some unique craft ideas, stop in at the
Corner Craft store. If they don't have what
you want, they'll try to order it for you.
V&G announces income
Victoria and Grey Trustco Limited has
announced net income for the year ended
October 31, 1983 of $36,623,000 or $1.79 per
share, compared to a net income of
$18,152,000 or 91 cents per share for the same
period last year.
Included in net income were security
gains of $8,232,000 or 40 cents per share,
compared to $5,602,000 or 28 cents per share
for the same period last year. Last year's
earnings also included a deduction of
$4,785,000 or 24 cents per share regarding a
reduction in the carrying value of its invest-
ment in Transohio Financial Corporation.
Total revenue for the year amounted to
$509,514,000 versus $503,902,000 last year.
The company has entered into an agree-
ment to dispose of its 24.7 percent interest in
Transohio Financial Corporation and has
received a non-refundable deposit of
$3,459,000. The expected net of tax gain of
approximately $4,900,000 has been deferred
until final closing which is conditional on the
purchaser obtaining regulatory approval to
hold shares of Transohio.
The company's subsidiary, The Premier
Trust Company, has sold its building at 19
Richmond Street West, Toronto. The tran-
saction will result in a net of tax gain of ap-
proximately $1,000,000 in the first quarter of
1984.
The company recently opened a full ser-
vice branch at 165 University Avenue,
Toronto, and a mortgage branch at 2065
Lawrence Avenue East., Toronto, bringing
total branches to 90.
The company's return on shareholders'
equity for the past year was 20.2 percent
versus 11.4 percent.last year.
The company announced a regular
quarterly dividend of 14 cents per common
share, payable December 24, 1983 to
shareholders of record December 16, 1983.
This represents a 2'2 cents per share in-
crease over the dividend paid the previous
quarter.
Maitland Manor Musings
Church entertain
BY SHIRLEY Ltri'LE
Various area church groups have recently
visited Maitland Manor for a variety of
special functions.
The Auburn United Church group enter-
tained at the monthly birthday party on
November 16, with Phyllis Rodger in
charge. Those celebrating birthdays were:
Phoebe Young, Ursula Hebert, Isabel Hart,
Peggy Sanderson, Charlie Gibbons and
Ethel McLean.
A new resident is welcomed to the Manor.
She is Dorothy McPhail from town.
On November 28, the North Street United
Church Women `Evening Unit' presented
the residents with a delightful program
which included a skit and songs by the
Craigellen Singers. They also provided
everyone with coffee and doughnuts.
The Reverend John Wood and the
Reverend R. Ball attended the Manor on
December 5 to receive Communion from the
United Church residents.
The Knox Presbyterian 'Children of the
Church' visited the residents on December 6
and sang a variety of Christmas Carols.
As Christmas is quickly approaching, the
residents and staff are busy putting up the
Aecorations and trees, but rumor has it that
as soon as they get one tree up, those lovable
little kittens, Tom and Sam Snowball, knock
another one down.
On December 8, the children from St.
Mary's School put on a Christmas program
at the Manor. This was a combined effort of
Inas, ul olio lnr reS1%.Avo J cal-
loyed it very much.
The annual traditional Christmas dinner
will be held at the Manor on December 16.
There will be room for 40 guests to attend, so.
register now ( call Cathy Wiebe - 524-7324 ).
Please have all of your Christmas lights
shining brightly on December 20, as the
residents will be taking a 'Color Lights Bus
Tour' beginning at 6:30 p.m. which will take
them all around the town. Upon their return
to the Manor, they will be treated to steam-
ing cups of hot chocolate and Christmas
snacks.
Santa Claus will be taking time out from
his busy schedule to stop into Maitland
Manor on December 21. He will be bearing
gifts for each of the residents. It is hoped
that lots of family members and friends will
attend the party.
The Reverend G. Kidd, the new minister
at the First Baptist Church, will he of-
ficiating at the Christmas day service at the
Manor.
The Residents are also busily planning a
colourful New Year's Eve celebration com-
plete with a fireworks display. Thanks go to
Larry McCabe and town officials for allow-
ing the residents to ring in the New Year in •
this special way. •
On behalf of the residents, staff and
volunteers of Maitland Manor, we would
like to take this opportunity to wish you all a
very Merry Christmas and a Happy New
Year and to say 'thank you' for your
assistance and support in the past year.
