The committee also considered the existing timing of the traffic signals and whether or not an all -red situation was required. It was noted in the traffic study that when the signals change at two in- tersections with lights, there is not a period, only for a second or two, when all lights are red. "It might help at five points where most accidents are left-hand turns onto KingAton Street," he said. "It may be worth a try but it wouldn't reduce the accidents, which are mainly a result of failing to yield right of way. The committee expressed some concern over the amount of time allowed pedestrians to cross the road, especially at the five -points intersection. No action was taken on the recommendation. VCIB Works committee will not change speed limit There will be no changes to the truck route in Goderich and no efforts will be made to reduce the speed of truck traffic in town the works committee decided Monday. The committee entertained a letter from J.E. Abell who asked if the town could post signs advising truckers to drive slowly and or reducing the speed limit for trucks to also reduce the noise factor along the route. Chief Pat King said that radar tests indicate trucks are not habitual speeders and that all motorists are advised to drive slowly, not just truckers. A reduction in the speed limit to perhaps 40 kmp would have to apply to all vehicle and not just rucks, Chief King explained adding that since truckers are not speeding now anyway, the signs are not C.C.M. With respect to the noise factor, Chief King said that a reduction in speed would not reduce the amount of noise produced by large trucks. The committee also agreed to have diagonal lines painted between the parallel crosswalk lines on The Square and at all intersections in school areas. The joint traffic study commissioned by the town and, MTC recommended that hatch marks be painted between the parallel lines of crosswalks on The Square. While noting that such crosswalks are not legally recognized, the committee felt they would offer an element of protection to school children and pedestrians on The Square. They would only offer a "false sense of security" Jim Searls said adding they should only be done around school areas and not on The Square.
