period.
All those store Santas can wear thin,
especially to parents of young children who
must explain the large number of Santa's
helpers. Those same parents would be more
happy if their children weren't able to sit on
Santa's lap. By making his appearance in
November, more youngsters can share their
secrets with the Jolly Old Elf. What seems
like long lines now could become more com-
plicated with a shorter visiting season.
So in spite of the artificial atmosphere
created by holiday decorations in October,
there are some obvious benefits to the early
retail season. While Christmas decorations
and shopping in December would be ideal,
it's not so practical However, the spirit of
Christmas still goes deeper than the pocket-
book. The true meaning of Christmas lies
within our hearts not our shopping centers.

customed to holiday decorations, -parades
and store Santas. Recently, however, holi-
day displays and merchandise have been
turning up after Hallowe'en. It's easy to
become cynical about retailers in pursuit of
the profits column of the balance sheet.

"Christmas is too commercial. Where !S the
true meaning of this holy celebration?"
The spirit of Christmas is giving. You
spend a lot of effort thinking of gifts just
right for each person on your list. Naturally,
you're disappointed if the items are not m
stock or sold out when you go shopping.
Although the air isn't crisp and you aren't
humming Christmas carols, early shopping
assures you of the gift selection you've
wanted. Perhaps a few special people on
your list require extra shopping care. As

Christmas collage is fun and easy
A "collage" for Christmas, easy to make
and costing only a few dollars, presents an
attractive centerpiece for the festive board.
Following the family holiday dinner, it can
be mounted on a wall or placed on a
sideboard as an added decoration during the
12 days of Christmas.
A holiday creation of an arts and crafts
department of a school, the centerpiece can
be made with inexpensive materials that
are usually found around the house. It can
be completed in an hour or two and stored
away for next year.
Household glue, paint, paper doilies,
drinking cups, 3 sizes of tree decorations
and, believe it or not, drinking straws are
the magic supplied for an artistic effort.
Easy -to -follow directions require simply
covering a 15 -inch square of smooth

each of the four corners, 6 inches for the
long and 41 inches for the short lengths.
Glue 6 -inch doilies to the four outer sections,
between the straws.
Then, spray the entire board with a
desired color of aerosol paint or enamel.
Vary the tones of the coating by making the
edges of the board darker. Allow enough
time to dry.
