On Saturday, December 3 at 2:30 p.m. in
the Livery, go to a couple of plays for
children. by the children. which the grown-
ups will enjoy. Diana Scott's group of six to
nine -year-olds have one play and Marianne
Dernpsey's older group of ten to thirteen -
year -olds will really entertain you.
The Recreation Board have been sponsor-
ing 'Exposure to Live Theatre' for the
children and deserve your "thank you!"
Sunday, December 4 at Knox Church at
7:30 p.m. there will be a Christmas Festival
or Pageant. It will, besides' other things,
show the story of the birth of the Christ
child. It will be a full night of entertainment
and you shouldn't miss it. A lot of work has
been put into these Saturday and Sunday
shows and they are just wonderful.
I hope you enjoyed the Santa Claus parade
- where a lot more work and fun went
towards putting it together. I liked it
because we didn't freeze or fall in the snow.
The weather held up for us. By the time San-
ta reached the corner where I was standing,
he must have been tired, because he stepped
down and went home. First time I ever saw
this happen, but perhaps he had to change to
his other suit. I thought the floats, bands,
horses and all, were good, but I was in-
terested in how the Little Theatre bowl for
their Christrflas pudding held up.
That Puddin' Bowl was some big
headache. Has anyone ever heard of making
a large bowl or odd bathtub of papier
inache'? Believe me, Ruth and I are the
bravest, nutty people that I ever knew.
To start, we had a large lump Of chicken
wire and an odd sized piece of plywood.
Ruth used her electric saw to make a bottom
for the bowl. Then we tried to staple the wire
to it. The staples either flew out or refused to
turn over in the wood so we had to put a
large axe under them and pound them down,
some of them turned and held but many flew
away' Stubborn things! The wire was folded
over at the corners but it was lwnpy - and in-
secure. We started putting the gooey strips
of paper on it anyway.
Now. I like to pull the paper through the
holes, folding it back on the ends onto itself.
This makes a nice flat surface to work on,
later. I don't know how Huth did her side but
it was flat on the outside and sticking out all
over on the inside. That poor bowl got a lot of
blessing. believe roe.

The first night we set it on a cardboard
box near the heat to dry it, next morning it
was found on the floor, folded over - all out of
shape. Very discouraging from then on try-
ing to make it round like a bowl. We tried
fastening pieces of corrugated cardboard to
the sides to hold up the wire. No co-
operation.
Were we discouraged? YES! So we tore it
apart and tried to fasten it together,
stronger, hoping it would stand up. So, we
just went on sticking tacky little pieces of
paper through the holes.. I had hoped with
enough gooey paper stuck in and out of the
wire, it would harden stiff and straight.
That $11 box of wallpaper paste should
make ANYTHING stand at attention. Now I
know that anything built of paste and paper
and "chicken wire" should have a strong
armature to cling to, but I just couldn't
figure out how to make one. So we struggled
on. •
Each night we hoped it would stand and
each morning we knew we should scrap it.
So we went on with working something that
resists your every poke, twists and turns
with every addition of a skinny sticky piece
of paper - which was quickly falling to
pieces and trying our best to cover up that
wire. Finally it was covered - more or less -
• so we decided to paint it fast as our time was
running out.
PAINT! What did we have on hand?
NOTHING! but we painted it anyway. We
found a few tins of tempera paint which
quickly rubs off on whoever gets near. The
colors were red, orange, brown, more red
and green, and a small amount of white. So
the artist (?) mixed together some brown,
red and white that looked terrible - so we

painted it.
With cardboard to hide the inside, we roll-
ed the top down a little to create a 'LIP',
then painted a little inside.
By that time Ruth was sick, really SICK
and I was afraid to be left alone with that
awful looking bowl and taking the blame,
alone. So I turned and turned it trying to find
its good side to show to the public. There
wasn't one! So I mixed some white and glue,
and painted PUDDIN' BOWL on the best
side.
I thought the inside should be something
light because two or three people were going
to stand around it, mixing imaginary pud-
ding. So I did a bit of scrawling for their eyes
only, hoping it would make them smile for
the crowd — the pudding WAS a mess!
After all our worries, it made third prize
can you beat THAT? Ruth was feeling better
so I decided I'd see what they would do with
the bowl. I arrived at the "tearing the float
apart" place in time to see a skinny young
lady pick ft up without effort and put it in the
trunk of her car. A young boy beamed,
"They gave it to me for my room."
"Great," I said, "It will hold a lot of stuff ! "
I'd like to know what his mother said, out-
side of "I'll get rid of it."
The next day, early, I had to go to
EMERG with a case of hives I couldn't
stand any longer.
I hope I didn't bore you with the tale of the
Puddin' Bowl, actually, I enjoyed it.
Haven't done any papier-mache in years.
Take care, keep well, and come and see
