The GDCI senior Vikings began the 1983-
84 boys' basketball season last weekend
with a pair of exhibition losses at home.
Friday night the Vikings lost 63=48 to
Sarnia St. Clair. Saturday, it was a 48-45
setback at the hands of General Amherst
of Amherstburg.
However, coach Myles Murdock was not
disappointed at his team's showing. The
Vikings haveust begun practices and
Murdock feels team has considerable
potential, with good height, quickness and
depth. He stressed the need for unproved
defence and shooting.
The Vikings got 15 points from Chris
Starkey, 11 from Paul Brenner and 10 from
John Murphy. Dave Smith hooped six and
John Thompson, Tim Bakker and Andrew
Carruthers got two points each.
For the winners Plaines had 19 and
Vanderwall had 14.. St. Clair led 36-22 at
half-time and held a 53-41 lead going into
ings 1ise
the fourth quarter.

all the way. General Amherst led 12-11,

points apiece. Tim Bakker and Paul
Brenner hit for six each. Kevin Smith
added three and Kevin Telford and Shawn
Rahbek had two points each. The Vikings

Two teams are undefeated
Thursday nights at the curling club the
roar of the curling stone and the slap of the
broom show the intensity of the competition
in the Industrial League curling. This past
week was no exception and there were some
great contests that went down to the last
rock.
In the 7 p.m. draw, the GDCI teachers
team led by George Sutton wore two up
coming home but the student opposition had
a chance to send it into an extra end. Fraser
Huyck and his all -girl team were lying two
when George came to shoot his last rock.
George was wide, but the rock curled just
enough to move the shot rock the centimetre
or two that was needed to win the game.
Tanya Jeffrey, a grade nine student, was the
main -stay on the student team and looks like
a good prospect for future highschool teams.
Ed Brissette of the Super Shell team had
little difficulty in downing Jim Bell's Legion
team 9 - 5, while the Lady Foresters showed
very little "lady -like" sympathy and
soundly trounced the Victoria and Grey
tream by a 14 - 2 score.
In the other 7 p.m. game, the Sifto Salt
Evaporators defeated the Lady Golfers 8 - 2.
In the 9 p.m. draw, Jack MacKinnon's
Health Unit team fought back to edge the
Elementary Teachers team 6 - 5 while the
GDC( Teachers Number two team were on
the winning edge of a see -saw battle that
saw Dave Cloet play some tricky shots to
take a 10 - 8 win over the Sifto Salt Maniacs.
Jack Kellough's 1863 team showed little in
the way of bedside manners to the short-
handed hospital team, and made them
swallow a bitter pill.
Paul Mulligan's Silver Broom team
scored on four different ends against Cam
Bogie's Forester team, but it wasn't enough
as Cam took two or three each time they
scored to win by a 10 - 4 score.
After two weeks of play, only two teams
are undefeated, the Foresters and the GDCI
Teachers No. one team.
For those curlers who, are looking for
more ice -time, the Sunday night mixed
league is looking for more players. Contact

trick for Hodges.
Local Atoms tie game
The Goderich Atoms increased their
record to one win, seven losses and two ties
Saturday as they played host to Ilderton.
The two teams fought to a 3-3 tie. Jamie
Stanley was Goderich's main player, as he
scored two goals while playing defence.
The first period was scoreless, but Stanley
opened the scoring in the second period as
he took a pass from Ryan Fagan. Also
credited with an assistwas Jeff Beange.
Ilderton managed to get on the scoreboard
before the period was ,over, ending the first
10 minutes of play with a 1-1 tie.
Ilderton didn't waste any time in the third
period as they came out with two quick goals
to take the lead 3-1. However, Goderich
fought back as Chad Papple shot one bet-
ween the posts at the visiting team's end.
Again assists went to Fagan and Beange.

Matthew Brown.
Huron Park was up by four at the end of
the second, only to have Steve DuBerry put
another one between the pipes early in the
third.
Goderich scored two more goals in the

,Jason Cook and Jeff Kent. Cook also scored
his second goal, assisted by Matthew
Brown. Chuck MacLennan, who has played

of table wine.
Many people are impaired, to a degree,
even with one drink. Play it safe. "NONE
