Senior ringette team defeats
Seaforth team 9 IN 7 last Sunday
BY ANNE NAREJKO
A competitive game of ringette was
played between the Goderich and Seaforth
senior teams on Sunday, with Goderich
emerging victorious, 9-7.
Goderich wasted no time as Angie
Chisholm feed the puck to Vicky Van-
derburgh for the first goal of the game
with only 1:34 gone on the clock. With the
attackers still pressing, Chisholm picked
up her second assist of the evening when
Allison Graham slide the ring past
Seaforth's goaltender, Kelly Calver.
Seaforth applied some pressure of their
own which resulted in Denise Morey's
goal, and brought them only one goal
behind Goderich.
Stacey Rean answered the Seaforth goal
with one for Goderich, regaining her
team's two goal edge. However, 19 seconds
later, Morey scored her second goal to
keep her team in contention.
The score once again see -sawed with
Lisa Kish scoring for Goderich and Morey,
with her third goal, scoring for Seaforth.
Angie Alcock changed the momentum of
the game when she netted two in a row
with both assists going to Stacey Rean. It
was Seaforth who had the last say in the
first period as Jan Vandenberk scored,
closing the period with a score of 6-4 in
favour of Goderich.
Seaforth came out in the second period
with the intent of taking over the lead as
Morey scored.her fourth of the night. Lisa
Kish, however, had a different strategy as
she put one in Seaforth's net followed by
teammate Vanderburgh's goal. Allison
Graham scored minutes later to give
Goderich a 9-5 lead.
The three quick goals by the Goderich
players did not discourage Seaforth as
they netted two more before the game was
over, but still were defeated 9-7.

Junior Ringette
One week ago Sunday, the Goderich
juniors met the Listowel juniors in
Goderich and came up on the short end of
the score, losing 14-7. Only three Goderich
players added points to their season
records as Debbie O'Brien scored five
goals, Tammy Talbot netted two and
picked up one assist, and Debbie Habel
earned one assist.
Listowel jumped outto a quick two goal
lead, scoring both goals within two
minutes. Trisha Rumig and Debbie
O'Brien connected a few minutes later to
bring Goderich within one goal of their
opponents.
Listowel responed with two more goals
but Goderich's O'Brien netted an
unassisted goal and then followed it with
another goal after receiving a pass from
Debbie Habel. Onlyight seconds elapsed
before Listowel found two openings behind
Goderich netminder Marianne Glazer,
making the score 6-3 for Listowel.
O'Brien and Tammy Talbot combined to
give O'Brien her fourth of the evening as
well as give her team some inspiration.
Listowel was not about to let Goderich
close the gap as they took the play to the
other end and added two more to their side
of the scoreboard.
Talbot cored one for Goderich before
the period was over, but Listowel netted
two more, closing the period with a 10-5
lead.
Goderich came out fighting in the second
period holding Listowel scoreless until
they scored one themselves. Talbot scored
another unassisted goal, giving her two
goals and one assist.
Listowel soon smothered any hopes of a
come back for Goderich when they scored
four goals in a four minute span. O'Brien
still had some hope left in her as she netted
one more for Goderich before the game
was over.

Locals blow 5-3 lead due to penalties
Midgets battle with St. Marys
St. Marys scored two powerplay goals in
the last two minutes to tie the Goderich
Legion Midgets 5 - 5 here last Saturday.
The two teams played scoreless for a
period and a half until St. Marys scored with
7:37 remaining in the second period. Darren
Creamer evened the score three minutes
later with Brent Williamson assisting. Todd
Jeffrey put Goderich in the lead with 16
seconds remaining in the second period
after taking a pass from Kevin Talbot.
The third period saw seven goals with St.
Marys getting four and Goderich three.
After St. Marys tied the score at two, Todd
Jeffrey again put Goderich in the lead with
Ken Huff and Brent Williamson assisting.
Chris Sideris then upped the Gdderich lead 4
- 2, with an unassisted effort. St. Marys
narrowed the score to 4 - 3, but Jeffrey
completed his hat trick to regain Goderich's
two -goal lead. Todd Gilchrist and Darren
Doak assisted on Jeffrey's third goal. St.
Marys then tied the game at 5 - 5 with two
late powerplay goals.
The tie gives the Legion Midgets a 4 win, 3
loss, 1 tie record in the Shamrock League.
The Midgets have a big weekend coming up,
playing in Parkhill Friday night and at
home Saturday against Ilderton. Parkhill
are in first place with a 9 win, 0 loss record
and defeated Goderich 7 - 2 in their only
meeting this year and Ilderton defeated
Goderich 4 -1 earlier this year.

Local groups don't want
video games in arena
BY ANNE NAREJKO
Despite being offered 50 per cent of the
intake, Goderich organizations do not want
video games in the arena, according to a
report presented to the Goderich Recreation
Board by the Agriculture Park Complex
Sub -Committee last Thursday.
During the October Recreation Board
meeting, Maurice Gardiner, owner of
Gardiner Video Games, suggested that a
machine be placed in the arena on a trial
basis. If any problems were to occur, he
would remove the machine immediately.
The Agriculture Park Sub -Committee
asked representatives of various groups
what they thought the of video games placed
in the arena lobby. The four groups
represented were opposed.
The representatives for Young Canada
Week were against the installation because
it may cause congestion in the lobby. They
were also concerned about crowd control.
The Figure Skating Club was against the
proposal because they are afraid it will
distract the skaters as well as make the boys
who take figure skating more self-conscious
with the extra people watching.
Minor Hockey was not in favour of having
the games in the arena for two reasons.
They have seen them in other arenas and
feel that they are unattractive, and, they
feel that the children spend enough money
at the arena already.
Ringette was opposed to the video games
for the same reasons as the other groups.
bantams advance to next
round in Cli
BY CB
On Wednesday evening the Goderich
(Elevator) Bantams challenged Strathroy
for the third time this season and lost again.
It was thought that the locals would have
fared better this time because it was
the first game on home ice against their
rival. However, Strathroy seemed to
dominate every period. The first goal
credited to Strathroy was actually put in by
a Goderich player as he tried to clear the
puck in front of his own net.
nton tourney
Strathroy added two more goals in the
second period before Goderich scored their
first. Tom Bean scored for Goderich
assisted by Byron Bowman and Scott
Garrow.
In the third period Strathroy added one
more while Goderich just couldn't organize
a strong attack. One thing the boys should be
credited with though is the fact that they
reduced their penalty minutes to only eight.
The Bantams also participated in a
Bantam Tournament in Clinton on the
weekend. On Friday evening they played a
team from Preston winning by a score of 8 -
4. Scott Garrow picked up three goals and
three assists, Larry Leppington two goals,
Shawn Larder two goals, and Mark Burbine
with one goal and one assist. Single assists
also went to Dave Duncan, Brian Chambers,
Tom Bean and Byron Bowman.
Because of their win, the boys played their
second game on Sunday morning against
Petrolia and were victorious again by a
score of 3 - 1. Watching part of the game on
Saturday between Petrolia and Woodstock,
many fans didn't feel the Goderich team
would fare too well against either team. To
their pleasant surprise the boys gave an all-
out effort in every period, their aggressive
forechecking and hard hitting disorganized
the Petrolia team.
At the beginning the fans thought their
fears were 'justified as Petrolia scored in
just a little more than five minutes into the
first period. However, that was also their
last goal. The Goderich team kept pressing,
and at the 6:27 mark of the second period,
Scott Garrow scored his first goal on a pass
from Byron Bowman. Twenty seconds later
Scott scored his second goal unassisted.
Darrell Durnin popped in Goderich's third
goal when the Petrolia goalie failed to clear
the puck after making the initial stop, giving
the Goderich team three goals in 28 seconds
and certainly a major achievement.
In the third period Petrolia came out
determined to even things up but the
Goderich boys refused to give an inch. When
asked for a comment after the game, coach
Wilkinson replied that he had told the boys
while in the dressing room about discipline
on defence.
"Defence is dull,' 'borin'g, and com-
monplace. It is the unimaginative plodding
attention to duty. It is grit and deter-
mination. There is never a day that
discipline on defence can't be used. All you
need is the decision to put out, to give 100
percent. What defence discloses is
character, effort and energy, are a matter
of will. Today our defence showed the pride
it takes to win."
He further stated he was pleased with the
performance of the team as a whole and that
Jay Williamson came up with some key
saves in goal when called upon to do so.
The tournament continues next weekend
when the locals take on St. Clair Beach at 3
p.m. Saturday, December 3 .
Seconds 'have 4-Orecord
On November 7, the Goderich Bantam
Seconds played their first regular season
game in Blyth. The boys played a strong
aggressive game and came up with a real
team effort for a 5 - 2 win. Goal scorers for
Goderich were Mike Creamer with two,
single goals by John Strickland, Bob Allen,
and Mark Cauchi. Assists went to Gary Erb

Whetstone, John Strickland, Mike Beange

On November 12, the Goderich Bantam
Seconds played Wingham Seconds and won
their second game of the season by a score
of 6 - 1. The Goderich boys out -hustled the
Wingham team during most of the game,
although Rob Middel and Tom Durnin had to
come up with some pretty good plays to stop
Wingham from adding to their total.
Goal scorers for Goderich were Gary Erb
and Bob Allen with two, while singles went
to David Brown and John Strickland. Assists
were by Mike Creamer and Mike Beange
with two and singles by Mark Cauchi, Gary
Erb, Bob Allen and Steve Armstrong.
On November 16, the Goderich Bantam
Seconds played their third game of the
season and first at home when they hosted
the Listowel Seconds. Goderich lit up the
scoreboard quickly when Darren Stanbury
scored 2:16 into the game. Listowel played a
solid game and had numerous opportunities
to score as Goderich started adding up the
penalty minutes. However, Mark Cauchi
helped the Goderich teams cause as he
scored two shorthanded goals. At the end of
one period the score was 3 -1 for Goderich.
Mark Cauchi scored his third goal of the
game 40 seconds into the second period and
then Goderich continued to exert pressure
for the remainder of the second period
which ended 5 - 2 in favour of the locals.
In the third, Goderich again started the
scoring but Listowel scored the final two
goals as the locals started running around in
their own end, making mistakes. The final
score was 7 - 4 for Goderich.
Goal scorers for Goderich were Mark
Cauchi with four goals, Darren Stanbury
one goal, Gary Erb one goal, three assists,
Mike Beange one goal. Single assists went to
Mike Creamer, Steve Armstrong, Bob Allen
and Steve Johnston.
On November 26, the Goderich Bantam
Seconds travelled to Parkhill to play an
exhibition game against their Second team.
Although the Goderich team won 7 - 2 it was
a lackluster effort until halfway through the
third period when the locals started playing
together. Goal scorers for Goderich were
Mike Beange with three goals, Mark Cauchi,
Gary Erb, John Strickland and Bob Allen.
Assists went to Mark Cauchi three, Mike
Creamer three, Ryan Kelly two with singles
going to Gary Erb, Steve Armstrong, Bob
Allen, John Strickland and Jim Kelly.
The locals have now won four in a row and
they return to regular league play on
November 30 when they host Blyth here at
8:15 p.m.
Peewees split games
In games played at the local arena last
week, the Goderich Lions Pee Wees were
defeated by St. Marys on Wednesday, and on
Saturday they defeated Exeter.
Against St. Marys a disastrous first seven
minutes of play saw the visitors tally six
times and then go on for an 8 - 2 win. The
Lions regrouped after the bad first period
and then had strong second and third
periods to make the game from getting out
of hand. Tim Harrison and Brian Lane had a
goal and an assist each for the locals while
Andre Cauchi and Jason Pearson had an
assist each to account for the Lions point
getters.
On Saturday, the Lions put three strong
periods together tor the ttrst time in awhile
and as a result they defeated visiting Exeter
in all departments enroute to a 6 -1 win. The
goaltending of Pat Donnelly and strong
skating of the defencemen complemented
the good backchecking from the forwards to
keep the opposition to just one goal.
The point getters in this game were, Tim
Harrison and George Sideris a goal and
assist each; Andre Cauchi and Jason
Creamer with two assists eaeh; single goals
were tallied by Gr .: g DeWinter, Brian
Lane, Jeff Hodg ,. and Chris O'Neill.
The Lions will las looking for more points
this weekend when they play in Parkhill
Friday and then Saturday against Ilderton.
