Repairs less WINGHAM - The cost of emergency repairs to the Howson Dam in Wingham will be substantially lower than expected. The contract for grouting a cavity under the dam and building a cutoff wall to stop undermining was awarded last week to McLean -Taylor Construction of St. Marys for $46,250. Although a number of extras being added to the contract may push the final price upward to about $55,000, the basic bid is well below both the original estimate of $80,000 and a revised estimate of $60,000. Round 'n About with Martha Seems I'm always collecting things - especially things I might use in a painting. In Florida I met several fine artists and I noticed .their filing cabinets were pretty crowded. So I have been trying to sort out some of my stuff -- like clouds, sun and water - all of which are pretty hard to paint because they move so fast. One year we visited friends from Sarnia who spend their winters in Fort Meyers, Florida. They are about 50 miles south of us when in Florida. Christine and I walked around their Park and I noticed a fine look- ing tree I had never seen before. Under it were pieces -- hard as wood - e6pt.ic• 1 in shape - that puzzled me until I found then to be from the seed pods of that tree. Moss fascinating seed pods I'd ever seen. Sort o like a walnut pod but longer. There were sc of these elongated pieces of dark red worm that covered the seeds that fly - lookea almost like a feather carrying the seed a the end of the shaft. The WOOD - ym couldn't dent with a hammer and couldn' saw through until the pieces were very dry. I had been looking at some photos am came upoh one taken that day, of me - anc that brought back the memory of tht fascinating seed pods. So you see, you should see a "memory' along with your photographs. We later - or that same visit - went to the Thomas A Edison workshop and home - or homes - since there was a small home there where Henry Ford stayed when he visited the Edisons. Every year Fort Meyers has a "Festival of Light" one weekend - celebrating the Edison wonders we now take for granted. We never ever think about when light was INVENTED - that was just a story we heard or read somewhere But if it is ever possible for you to be in Fort Meyers, you MUST go to the Edison buildings. Every day of our lives we use something Edison invented! We like Fort Meyers - there are many things to see there. We have also been to Naples - which is about a hundred miles south of us - where we saw their Swamp - buggy Races several times and enjoyed this unusual feature on the edge of the Everglades. Here is an item I've had tucked awav - among OTHER things: Remember when HIPPIE meant big in the hips and a TRIP involved travel in cars, planes and ships? When POT was a vessel for cooking things in and HOOKED was what Grandmothers rug might have been? FIX was a verb that meant mend or repair and BE -IN meant simply existing somewhere? When NEAT meant well -organized, tidy and clean and GRASS was a ground cover, nor- mally green? When FUZZ was a substance that's fluffy like lint, and BREAD camp from bakeries and not from the mint? When SQUARE meant a 90 degree angled form and COOL was a temperature not quite warm? When WAY OUT meant distant and far, far away, and a man couldn't sue you for calling him GAY? When DIG meant a shovel and spade in the dirt and PUT ON was what you would do" with a shirt? f Words once so -set -231111e, sober and serious are making the freak scene like PSYCHEDELIRIOUS! It's groovy, man, groovy but English it's not - me thinks that the language has gone straight to POT. Jane Goodwell made all this up - and I real- ly DIG her! So do have a care, keep away from this ROT or you'll find you're a junky and going to POT. Forgive me.
