75 YEARS AGO
The Goderich Planing Mill Company's 11
storey frame dwelling on Nelson Street is
nearing completion and the 11/2 storey brick
veneered dwelling opposite the Organ
Factory on Cambria Road will soon be
ready for occupation.
Babel and Hommel of Goderich have been
awarded the contract for the cement work
On the electric railway between Kincardine
sled Goderich. It will rim into several
thousand yards.
Miss E. Pauline Johnson, who is the
daughter of en Indian chief and has a world-
wide reputation as both a poet and en-
tertainer, will be at the Opera House here
December4.
The work on the oil well at Lochalsh
stopped last week, the drill breaking in the
bore when 850 feet down. The company has
taw given up the work, as there were no
signs of oil, and all capital raised fot the job
has been lost.
50YEARS AGO
Dr. J.B. Whitely of Goderich has been
medical officer of health for Goderich
Township for 47 years, a record believed
unique in the province. A resolution of ap-
preciation was passed at the township
nominations at Holmesvi le on Friday. Dr.
Whitely has been practising in Goderich for
half a century and has no thought of retiring.
Mose Robins, clothing merchant and fish
exporter, made a test shipment of Lake
Huron's finest trout to New York City
recently. He shipped 110 pounds and netted
$2.92 after deductions for express, duty, etc.
Mose has decided it doesn't pay to ship fish
to New York at the present time.
TW►enty five men, all supporting families,
are now employed at the Town of Goderich
woodlot in Colborne Township. Four hun-
dred cords of wood have been cut so far.
Wilmot Haacke has been returned by
acclamation for a third term as Reeve of
Goderich Township. In Ashfield Township,
Reeve Murdock Matheson and Deputy -
Reeve Richard Johnston were returned
without contest.
25 YEARS AGO
"I think we're taking the town back 80
years by taking over a building the federal
government doesn't want," declared
Deputy -Reeve Peter S. MacEwan. He was
the lone objector present Thursday night
when town council held a special meeting to
give three readings to a by-law authorizing
an exchange of the town hall and post office
properties. A petition from 23 West Street
businessmen, objecting to the move, was
Ned. Under the terms of the deal approved
by council, the 78 -year-old town hall on East
Street will be handed over to the federal
government in exchange for the 70 -year-old
post office on West Street for $14,000 cash.
The idea of swapping properties was
Councillor, Bruce Sully's brainchild after
learning in March that the federal gover-
nment was planning to demolish the old post
office and construct a new $250,000 federal
building on the same site on West Street.
Goderich Police Commission has hired a
sergeant, Harold J. Calvert, 37, who has 71
years experience with Kitchener Police
Department. He will start December 8 at
$3,800 per year. His appointment brings the
strength of the Goderich Police Department
op to Biz men, including the chief.
The Roman Catholic Diocese of St.
;Catharines was officially erected on
Tuesday morning when its Brat bishop, Most
Reverend Thomas J. McCarthy, a native of
Goderich, was installed 111 services rich in
color and ceremonial splendour.
The 17th annual Huron County Music
Festival will be discontinued in 1969, the
Festival Committee decided Monday
evening when no one offered to assume the
responsibility of the office of president of the
organization.

Terminal facilities are defintely needed at
the Goderich Municipal Airport. This was
the conclusion reached by members of the
Airport Committee when they met last
Wednesday evening. The members decided
to recommend to next year's committee that
a terminal be thought of as a main priority
when considering land usability at the
idrport
accordingly
and the money be budgeted for plans
The Goderich and District Big Brothers
Association will be conducting a mem-
bsrabip drive during the next couple of
moths.

County Unit of the Canadian Canner Soddy,
