Chief retires
LUCKNOW - Lucknow Fire Chief George,
Whitby has notified village council that he
will retire as chief of the Lucknow District
Fire Department effective Dec. 1. Council
was reluctant to accept the resignation and
did so with regret.
All councillors agreed with Councillor Ab
Murray who said Whitby had done a fine job
in creating an excellent volunteer fire
department to serve the people of Lucknow
and surrounding municipalities, during his
25 years as chief of the department.

The Goderich Garden Club met in Robert-
son School on November 16. President Nor-
ma Hazlitt presided for the meeting. The
minutes of the last meeting and the
treasurer's report were approved as read.
Francis Worsell introduced the guest
speaker for the evening, Bert McCreath. His
subject was "The Growing of Nut Trees." In
a recent visit to Hawaii, he had seen a 5,000
acre plantation of Macadamia nut trees.
These trees are about the size of our apple
trees, he said. The nuts of the Macadamia
grow in clusters. They are a very expensive
nut to buy but also very delicious.
Mr. McCreath said there is a Society in
Ontario for nut growers and if you belong,
you receive bulletins periodically telling of
different grafts that can be done on the trees
and much more useful information. He ex-
plained that all nut trees need plenty of
room to grow and plenty of sunlight to pro-
duce fruit. The land must be well drained
and it is necessary to fertilize early in the
spring so the nuts will not be soft at harvest
time but ripen well.
Mr. McCreath said the nuts of white oak
are not edible while the red oak nuts are. He
said it was very interesting to note that the
Ginko tree the Garden Club planted last spr-
ing belongs to the uut tree family but it is a
male tree and will riot produce fruit. He ex-
plained that nut growers are trying to
develop a pecan nut tree that will grow in
the northern climate but said it is doubtful if
they will ever produce nuts.
Edith Argyle thanked Mr. McCreath for
his most interesting and informative talk.
Correspondence included a letter from
Southex Exhibitions telling members the
Flower and Garden Show will be held in
Toronto February 22-26. Also a letter was
received from Ontario Horticulture Associa-
tion suggesting ways to celebrate Ontario's
Bicentennial.
Two members expressed thanks for cards
sent to them during their recent illnesses.
Garden Club signsJiave been ordered but
are not ready for delivery yet.
Norma Hazlitt donated two jars of jam as
door prizes. These were wore by Peg
Lumsden and Dorothy Pfrimmer.
In her closing remarks, the president
wished everyone a Merry Christmas since
there is no December meeting and she
thanked all for their thoughtfulness while
she was hospitalized.
The lunch cornmlttee sfArved Christmas
dessert and beverages. A social time was
then spent together.
