Tom, wlio complimented Miss liliners
on the thoughtful paper she had given.
Mrs. Mayberry, teacher of art in the
Normal School, Stratford, and repre-
sentative of the Department of Educa- 1
titan, then gave a splendid address on
"The Teaching of Art in Relation to
Expression," Mrs. Mayberry deplored
the system of teaching art that has
prevailed for years—a system that
allows children to give free expression
to their ideas without guidance, but
believed achild had to learn how to
express himself by constant practice.
She thought the schools should have
special teachers for the subject. Me-
ehanical drawing should precede all
other work in art.
The .discussion was, •. led. by Messrs.
Tom and Strang, fir, Strangtbought

Sixty-seven teachers were present.

things noticed in his rounds of inspec-
tion and made one or two announce-
ments. Adjournment was then made.

thoughtful paper on "Fifth Class
Work." He showed that the regula-
tions of the present day in regard to
fifth clastis work were better than
those of a few years ago, as the pupil
tnay now pass into the third form
from the public school. He felt that
the fifth class in the rural school was
good for teacher and pupil. The
pupil is kept at home while too young
to leave home and it would be ruore
ecc,nomical for the parents.. The
teacher finds that it is good for him
and the rest of the school. o®
The discussion was continued by In-

Johnston.
