Mrs. Mayberry, teacher of art in the Normal School, Stratford, and repre- sentative of the Department of Educa- 1 titan, then gave a splendid address on "The Teaching of Art in Relation to Expression," Mrs. Mayberry deplored the system of teaching art that has prevailed for years—a system that allows children to give free expression to their ideas without guidance, but believed achild had to learn how to express himself by constant practice. She thought the schools should have special teachers for the subject. Me- ehanical drawing should precede all other work in art. The .discussion was, •. led. by Messrs. Tom and Strang, fir, Strangtbought too much stress was put on drawinrr in schools. Sixty-seven teachers were present. inspector Tom spoke of a number of things noticed in his rounds of inspec- tion and made one or two announce- ments. Adjournment was then made. A'TERNOON SESSION en Long, prineipal of Victoria school, Goderich, explained how nat- ural defects, such as flat-footedness and hollow chests, might be corrected by Mame of the movements, JLr. McLaughlin also spoke on the subject. Miss V. Miners, of Victoria 'school, Goderieb, read an excellent paper on "Arithmetic for Senior Third." She thought arithmetic the most import- ant subject on the okirrjculuta and its cultural value depended on the method used in teaching it.
