with 20 branchee located in four
prdWinces, O'Malley explained that Stan-
dard Trust primarly serves smaller
municipalities in Ontario. Pleased to be a
part of the town's vibrant core, he said the
town has responded to the new trust com-
pany°
"It's a good location for our company and
our first few week'a,business verified that,"
he said. "We opened 1,000 new accounts hi
he first month representing $2.5 million in
deposits."
While the public image of trust companies
may have been fully repaired to date, it was
only: one year ago that the 'provincial
government stepped hi and seized the assets
of three trust companies. Standard Trust
was appointed receiver of Greymac Mor-
tgage and are managing, on behalf of the.
registrar of trust companies, $450 million in
assets. The company's role as receiver is
now winding down .
The sale of over 11,000 apartment units
involving the three trust companies made
consumers more cautious and concerned
about the stability of banking institutions
O'Malley said. People are now looking to
quality financial institutions.
This past week, Consumer and Com-
mericial Relations Minister Robert Elgie
released a government white paper which
proposes sweeping changes to crack down
on problems in the trust copmpany business.
The government recommends an increase
in the amount of capital required to operate
a trust and loan operation and also proposed
to boost the lending powers of the trust and
loan companies.

The new Standard Trust Company branch office on The Square in
Goderich was officially opened at special ceremonies here Wed-
nesday. Standard Trust Company president, Brian O'Malley;
The chatlges and recommendations were
welcomed in the industry and O'Malley said
it will help enhance the image of the trust
and loan business.
"The proposals by Elgie are positive and
put strong restrictions on who can own a
trust company and the government can even
approve the appointment of a chief
executive officer and a chief financial of-
ficer," he said. "They have expanded our

cent to compete with banks. Legislation
mostly encouraged trust companies to in-
vest in residential mortgages but the
market has changed in recent years."
Encouraged by the new restrictive
measures proposed by the government and
the public's acceptance of the new branch in
Goderich, O'Malley is optimistic of the
company's future and he is pleased to be the
shiny new kid on the block, in the "prettiest
town m Canada."
OMB hearing held in Colborne Twp.
An Ontario Municipal Board (OMB)
hearing was held last Wednesday at the
Carlow Hall to present the Colborne
Township zoning by-law 18-1982.
After Township council passed the by-law
in August 1982, copies were circulated to
property owners so they could raise their
objections. Twenty-three objections were
received by Colborne Township' Clerk
Hudson Milburn, many of which were
resolved before the hearing.
The purpose of the by-law is to provide the
township with zoning regulations which
would control all forms of land use within
the municipality. The by-law effects all
property which lies within the limits of the
Township of Colborne.
The Township's lawyer, Dan Murphy and
Gary Davidson, Planning Director for the
Corporation of the County of Huron, went
through all of the objections, explaining to
board members H.H. Lancaster and K.D.
Bindhardt, what the complaints were and
how they had tried to resolve them. In some
instances it was a case of the person
misinterpreting what was written. In many
cases the by-law was amended with the
intention that council will pass the amen-
dments.

feels it should be zoned extractive resource
because he would like to open a gravel pit
some day. According to Davidson, some of
the properties surrounding Etzler's are
zoned extractive resource but this is
because they have existing gravel pits.
John Maaskant was also present to voice
his concerns about the properties that were
referred to as the Bishop lands (ap-
proximately 1.5 miles north of Foresters
Bridge on the banks of the Maitland River.)
Maaskant had no specific complaint but
felt that it was generally to easy to get a
building permit to build on these lands.
The resolutions to the objections have not
yet gone before council. The results of the
hearing should be known in approximately
one month.
