'n About
In re -arranging Some hooks the other .day,
I found an oldie UhadnIread in ages.
A bit of verse by Strickland W. Gillilan
caught my !ye .and was unable to put it
down. Quote "Wlten,'Finnigan first writ to
Flannigan, 'he writed tin pages~- did.'Fin-
nigan" - and I'm sure Charlie Farquharson
must use this stuff because I couldjust hear
him quoting verse after verse ending with
quote, "An he writed this here: Musther
Flannigan: Off agin, on agin, gone agin -
Finnigan."
If you can't remember the story, I can tell
it - someday. So page after page - I laughed
'til I cried. Even had Walt laughing too! I
get a kick out of dialects - Irish or Cockney
are just straight "country". I can read it
and hear it as I read!
So that led me to a Robert Benchley and
I'm sure I've heard "Charlie" telling some
of these little stories because they are writ-
ten especially for him. I thank!
And this one cleared up a lot of things for
me. Title, "Don't Get Lost!" it says, "If you
are one of those helpless people who are con-
stantly getting lost and just standing still
and sobbing, the coming season holds out
great hope for you. (I should have foui}d this
earlier). The stars are going to be usually
right this summer. You can't get lost if you
know the stars - unless of course you can't
see the stars. People usually get lost more
easily in summer than they do in winter,
because they find themselves in stranger

placea in seunme! . Anyone who,. iri winter,
gets lost in his own street, or even f iVe
blocks from his Own street (Which as as far
away as any sensible naan gets in winter),
will not be benefitted by Loot, g at any
stars. What he needs is a nice syinpathetie
cop. But in summer, you get to stumbling
around in fields, or on the beach looking for
inrseshoe-crabs and along about eleven
o'clock in the evening, you are quite likely to
find yourself tripping over an old cigarette
butt of yours that you dropped half an hour
to
before
way home.
hatde ownheaed.Yo're
nobody's fool.
"If you find yourself lost during GOT last
two weeks of July (you have simply
to
know, in a general way, what time of the
month it is, or I can be of no help to you),
look in the skies for the brightest star, which
ill be Jupiter. Then you say:
Jupiter!" So far so good.
"Now, work backward. I don't mean
WALK backwards, but say to yourself:
"Jupiter should be right over our house - a
little to the left." You will have to have
figured this out before leaving the house, but
that's the fun of the thing. There will be so
much figuring out to do before you leave the
house that you -may not leave at all, and then
you won't get lost.
"Therefore if Jupiter is right over your
house and a little to the left, the thing for you
to do now, is to walk very carefully, toward
Jupiter - and a little to the right. This will
land you nicely in the old north creek.

"Or if you. happen to get lost during the
middle of August, (between the lith and the
21st, to be et[aet - don't count on it if it hap-
pens to be the 22nd), you must look for
Venus.
"Venus is unusually' bright after sunset,
so lay your plans to get lost after sunset. All
you have to know is just what relation Venus
bears to the spot yen are headed for and -
presto - there you are still lost!
"Of course if you get lost indoors, in a
strange house, and can't find the bathroom,
it will do you no good to stick your head out
the window to look for a star. Neither can
you count on the heavens if you find yourself
lost in your own bed, with the footboard
where the headboard ought to be. In such
emergencies as these, you will simply have
to use your wits.
"But in general, there is no excuse for a
good .woodsman or a good mariner getting
lost in the summertime - unless of course he
WANTS to get lost. That can happen too".
NOW - how are you doing? Are you up in
the air with Benchley? 1 am! I think he and
Farquarson are a great pair. Don't you?
Have a good week. Laughter and friends
are great medicine so use both of them.
Love, Martha
