At the annual meeting of the Ontario
Heart Foundation, the members confirmed
a special resolution authorizing the Founda-
tion to apply for supplementary letters pa-
tent to change the name of the Foundation to
Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario.
The special resolution culminated a year-
long study of the Foundation by a Strategic
Planning Committee and from recommen-
dations submitted to the Board by this Com-
mittee. __

cepted the responsibility to financially sup-
port stroke research in Ontario and since
that time has expanded its comritment
more fully and to cement this connection to
the Heart Foundation in the minds of the
people, the name change was deemed to be
a more appropriate presentation of the man-
date of the Foundation.
Application for supplementary letters pa-
tent is currently being processed to
facilitate a legal name change and the of-
ficial date of change will be announced at a
later date.
Fit women not better off
Women who are fit when they start their
pregnancy do not seem to have any easier a
time of labor and delivery than do unfit
women, a Canadian physiologist has found.
In a study of eight fit and eight unfit
women, Dr. Terry Graham of the University
of Guelph found no difference in length of
labor, whether labor had to be induced,
whether the women needed anesthesia or
whether the infant .had to be delivered by
forceps.
The newborn infants of the two groups
also showed little or no difference. Those
born to the fit mothers had slightly better
colour, breathing, pulse and reactions at one

minute after delivery but the difference
between the two groups had disappeared
within five minutes, he found.
The findings contradict frequently -made
claims that fit mothers have an easier labor
and healthier, more alert babies, Graham
says.
However, he adds, the findings might be
explained in part by the fact that although
the women formed two distinct groups at the
start of pregnancy - the fit women perform-
ed better on a step test and had less body fat
- by the end of pregnancy there was relative-
ly little difference between the two groups.
One point in favor of the fit women was
that, once the pregnancy was over, they lost
weight more quickly.
However, your Lung Association knows
that even "fit" pregnant women should
