English Railroads to House All Their Workers. The soaring . cost of living has moved the English railroad eom- panies . to consider a scheme for carrying out a huge housing scheme,. of/their own to.provide aeconzmoda tion for all grades of workers. It has be'hn found that the heavi- est item the men have to meet is the increased rent charge for houses or tenements in city areas, the eonse quence being the railway workers have no alternative but to hand overa large proportion of their pay to near -by landlords or to go at - convenient distances front their work. Already the companies have house accommodation for some re- sponsible officialsso as to ensure air being on hand in case of a liPhrry call, but now the proposal is to provide for all grades. .. It is sug- gested that a certain proportion of the earnings of the railroads should be reserved ever year for this Y building scheme. Most of the rail- roads have land enough adjacent to their right-of-way so they could let their houses to the mem at bedrock prices. • Trade union officials look askance at this +scheme, They say it is not actuated by generous motives, but aims at screwing dovni the .men. more firmly than ever. Workers, they believe, who depend not only for their pay, bttt for, their homes, ort the good -will of the eisnlpanies, will be clew to strike at the call of the organizers of the unions. • "MY husband eonsidered a very long time before he proposed to ane; lie• WAS "Vei'.y eareftil," "Ah,' always Choat oliereful people who get taken .in 1'I THE TRUE CAUSE OF RHEUMATISM Due to Aoidin the ,Blood—Uan Only be Cure Through h tea Blood, Not many years ago even doctors thought that 'rheumatism was only a local pain caused by exposure to Gold or wet. Now they know that the trouble is caused by the blood becoming tainted with uric acid. This condition of the blood caus- es es the muscles to contract, stiffens the joints and irritates the nerves, If not, promptly treated the stiff- ness spreads and the pain ` grows ip- it encrashelpless ci worse ant ple, tortured day and night. If the disease touches the heart it"means sudden 'death. You cannot eure rheumatism with liniments, plas- ters or hot cloths, as so many try to do. You mist go right to the root of the trouble in the blood. The scientific way to cure rheuma- tism is to take Dr. Williams' Pink Pills, which make new, rich blood that goes right to the root of the trouble. They sweep out the pois- onous acid, loosen the aching joints and muscles and bring ease and freedom where before had been pain and misery, Miss Beulah Sheppy, Morpeth, Ont., says : "Following an attack of measles I `;took inflammatory rheumatism. My joints became swollen . and the pain was almost unendurable. I doctored with two doctors, but the pain was only re- lieved while I ,was taking their me- dicine, and soon returned. For six months I continued to stiffer in this way. Then I tried electric pads, but they failed to do meany good. Finally a friend persuaded me to try Dr. Williams' Pink Pills, and I had not been taking them long before I found relief. I con- tinued using. the Pills for a time and- soon 'found myself in perfect health and feeling like a new per- son: I never lose an opportunity to recommend Dr. Williams' Pink Pills as 1 cannot say enough in fa- vor of them." ' Sold by all medicine dealers or by mail at 50 cents a box or six boxes for $2.50 from The Dr. Wil - 'lams' Medicine Co, Brockville, Ont, ►p When one is inclined to worry the remark of an old lady should be recalled;—"Yes, dearies; I'd have had an awful heap of trouble in . my time if most of it had hap- pened." CASTING CANDY' TOYS. . 1 Manufacturers Are °ettiug Ready for Christmas. 'About now is the time when cane dy manufacturers begin casting candy toys for the holiday trade, those various figures of hard, trans- parent candy that have been so long familiar. The season for the manufacture and sale of these goods Trow lasts annually for four months, from Sep-` telnber to December. Fifty years ago these hard candy figures which young folks eo much fancy, were el to given to the 'hildr a likely be g v o en t Christmas only,. along with their other Christmas gifts, but in later years they have come to be used as well for gifts at heirs and fest ivals and so their season has been ex- tended, but the. toys themselves rye.- main' in the •same old'time forums in which' they have been handed down through generation after generation. It is doubtful if the children would like to see them changed, There are shill made the same familiar candyhorses and candy dogs and boats and flower pots and -louses and fleshes and cats and rab- bits and men, all just as before, and now as ever the little children to whom these figures Dome stand themupto see if they will S tand alone and then in due time they pick up a candy horse and bite off its head, and then finally they eat the rest of it, all just as they have always done and they like them as much as ever. • But while these candy toys in their shapes remain the same) there have been some changes in the details of their manufacture. In old times they were made in just two colons, red and yellow, and with perhaps two, flavors, lemon and wintergreen., whereas now they are turned out in many separate colors or tints and in many flavors, Here, for instance, is one candy manufac- turer, who makes these toys in. twenty or more different shapes and each .one in nine separate sabre and in nine separate flavors. They are cast in iron moulds. These goods are known, as assorted elear toys and they are put up for the trade in boxes of five pounds and in pails of thirty pounds. Their production is started early to give time for distribution, and already the casting of these toys for the. present season has begun. They are turned out annually in mil- lions. RIGHT HOME. Doctor Recommends Postum from Personal Test. No ens is better able to realize the injurious action of caffeine the drug in coffee—on the heart, than the doctor. Tea is just as harmful as coffee because it, too, contains the drug caffeine. "I am prescribing it now in cases of sickness, especially when coffee does not agree, or affects the heart, nerves or stomach.
