Line-ups xpecte+d Ontario Transportation and Communica- tions Minister Jaques Snow recently remind- ed motorists their license stickers expire on their birthday, not the end of their "birth- . day" month. "itf everyone would pick up their renewal stickers before, or at least on their birth- day," Snow pointed out, "they could alleviate an expecte rush at the end of November and•December. "And it's only fair to warn motorists with birthdays late in these months," he con- 4J{' tinned. "They will save themselves time and the aggravation of standing in lineups, If they're prepared to pick up their stickers a little earlier than their birthdates. The fact is, we anticipate a large number of transactions during the final days of these months," Snow continued, "because com- panies are temporarily assigned renewal dates at these times as part of the phasing in of the staggered renewal system. After this year, companies will be able to choose renewal dates throughout the. year which will spread the renewal times more evenly," he added. "In the meantime, we've asked our licence issuing offices to handle the ex- pected rush as expeditiously as possible," Snow concluded. °However, the fact re- mains a lot of companies will be renewing large numberofstickers during the latter part of these months and some delays can be expected." Livery for sale LOOKING BACK - 75 YEARS AGO Dr. Millyard, who has been with Dr. Whitely here for some time, , left on Tuesday to further pursue his chosen profession. He, will be absent six or eight months and will take special courses in the leading hospitals of the world. This week a new lighting system has been installed at Cameron and Moore's store. Each light throws out 1,000 candle power and three of these lights are installed on the main floor. The most effective and happily ap- propriate window display ever made in Goderich is that shown all this week in Hodgens Brothers' large store, designed to mark Thanksgiving Day and the birthday of King Edward. A special committee of town council has been formed to consider the cost of .having street signs put up around town. Water pipes are being put in to supply Elgin Avenue between Wellington and Wellesley Streets. 50 YEARS AGO .A cold snap has_put the boys in towjllrjthe notion of putting on their skates. There is talk of forming a junior hockey team in Goderich this year. Some of the junior players around town last year were Norman Warnock, Jim Sheardown, Arnold Doak, Harvey Scrimgeour, Pat Page, Harvey Stoddart, Arthur Doak and Bill Robinson. Two hundred cords of wood fell before axe and saw at the town's woodlot in Colborne Township during the first 10 days of operation recently.. The force of men varied from six to 21. The wood cutting project was designed to give work to Goderich men who had been unable to find jobs elsewhere. Citizens who had been complaining of low water pressure were very interested in a report which a Hamilton engineer, E.H. Darling, presented to Goderlch PUC this week. Herecommended the building of a new well, the installation of a duplicate main from the pumping station to the centre of town (ata cost of$15,000) and the building of a larger standpipe. He condemned the ' installation of two-inch mains. 25 YEARS AGO The sixth annual conference of Teen Town Clubs in Western Ontario, held at Goderich on the weekend, was the largest attended and most successful one in the history of the organization. Mayor E.C. Fisher announced Friday night that he will seek a second term, but at least three experienced members of town council may not let their names stand for re- election. They are Deputy -Reeve Peter S. MacEwan, Councillor C.M. Robertson and Councillor Joseph Allaire. Report of the warden's committee sub- mitted by Chairman N.W. Trewartha of Clinton and containing recommendations in connection with the county office staff, stirred the first debate of the November session. It ended in adoption of the report. Appointment of John G. Berry as clerk - treasurer at $8,500 passed without discussion but not so the selection of Bill G. Hanly of Stanley Township to be deputy clerk -treasurer at $4,000, duties to com- mence January 1. It was recommended that Mrs. Eleanor Erskine continue as deputy clerk -treasurer until the end of the year. Monday was Roy M. Sparling's last of- ficial working day. The 65 -year-old local agent of the CNR retired after more than 47 years of continuous service with the com- pany. 5 YEARS AGO Anyone out there with an interest in historical buildings in Goderlch and enough working capital to buy such a property should get down to South Street before Monday to see Ken Hutchins. Hutchins, a Goderich businessman who is leaving town later this month to make his permanent home in the warmer climate of Hawaii, has the former Polley Livery Stable for sale. The 114 -year-old atone building, ?which until recently housed a portion of Glenmark Lumber, will probable be coming down next Tuesday unless some buys the property right away. Goderich Recreation Director Mike Dymond announced his resignation from the post Wednesday. Dymond, who has served as recreation director here for six years, is leaving to become director of community services in Wallaceburg. The contract for the maintenance dredging at Goderich harbor has been let to McQueen Marine Ltd. of Amherstburg.
