For the second year in a row, it will be the Goderich Vikings and the Stratford Nor- thwestern Huskies in the Huron Perth Con- ference senior football finals. The two teams qualified for the champion- ship matchup by winning sudden -death semi-final games last Thursday. The Vik- ings hammered the Listowel Lords 43-0 here while the Huskies were defeating Norwell 7- 3 in Stratford. The final game will be played here Satur- day at the Viking Field; beginning at 1:30 p.m. If last year's game between the same two teams is any indication, Saturday's final should be a thriller. The Vikings won the championship last year with an exciting 14- 13 victory over the Huskies. A potent part of the Huskies' attack is their quarterback, former Junior Viking, Mike Evans, whose running and passing represent a double - threat to coaches' Ray Donnelly and Chris Connor's Vikings. Here last Thursday, the Vikings had little trouble disposing of the Listowel Lords. The Viking offence was at its potent best, piling up 407 yards along the ground. All three running backs, Jeff Feagan, Ed Craig and John McGraw rushed for over 100 yards individually, with Feagan leading the way with 166 yards and three touchdowns on runs of three, 23 and 71 yards. McGraw had two touchdowns, one on a six yard off-track run, the other on a 33 -yard sweep. Ed Craig got the Vikings' first touchdown on a three yard dive play. Joe Melady continued his impressive con- vert string, kicking all six successfully and also kicked a single point for the Vikings. The Viking defence came to play too, holding Listowel to 66 yards rushing and 49 in the air for a total of only 115 yards. Inside . •-linebackers'-Dave' Weaver and 1Lie"k „Haas were especially prominent in making many key tackles. Ladies defending champions off to good start The defending ladies champion in the Blyth broomball league, Belgrave, is off to its best start ever this season. This may sur- prise a few people, because the team lost one of its top scorers and Last season's most valuable player Joan Riley. This year Belgrave has demonstrated a much more balanced scoring attack, than in the past few seasons, and has already outscored their opponents by a 12-1 margin in their first four games, all of which were victories. Last Tuesday, Belgrave battled arch -rival Blyth Baintoneers, and thumped the Bain- toneers by a score of 4-1. Donna Walsh led Belgrave with a goal and an assist, while Cheryl Walker, Merrilyn Black and Andrea Lucas added one goal apiece. June Bakker collected two assists and Marie Brindley ad- ded one for the winners. Patty Schoemaker set up Marg Kroes for the Baintoneers' lone goal. On Thursday night, single goals by An- drea Lucas, June Bakker and Donna Walsh led Belgrave to a s -o romp over the Goderich Knight Riders. Collecting one assist each were Donna Walsh, Cheryl Walker and Brenda Gordon. In further action on Tuesday night, the Lakelet Hornets opened up a 3-1 first period lead, and then hung on for a narrow 3-2 win over the Clinton Warriors. Andy Battye set up Doug Kreller for the game -winner, while Doug and Ron de Boer had one goal and assist each for the Hornets. Don Dimaline netted both goals for the Warriors, with Ralph Kuiper and Clarence Dekens collec- ting one assist each. The Lucknow ladies, needed two overtime goals from Dianne Golley and Arlene Turner to post a 3-1 victory over Auburn. Rose Kieffer scored Lucknow's other goal and Sheila Walker added one assist. Barb Patterson was set up by Debbie Cook for the only goal by Auburn. Phil Black with one goal and two assists, led the Auburn Falcons to a 3-0 shutout over the Maitland Dirt Riders. Terry Powell with one goal and one assist, and Bob Watkins with one goal, also collected points for Auburn. Brock Hasty led the Inn with one goal and assist, while Pat Cronin and Dwayne Toth had one goal each. Herb Govier and Dan Keffer each collected one assist. Debbie Cook's unassisted goal was all Auburn needed as they posted a 1-0 victory over the Goderich Harbourlites. Blyth Bears were led by single goals from Fred de Boer and Terry Sowerby as they shutout the Goderich Oarsmen 2-0. Bruce Dougherty picked up one assist in the game for the Bears. The G.D.C.I. Junior Vikings will have to go on the road in search of the 1983 Huron Perth football championship. The Vikings' date with destiny will come Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in Exeter when they do battle with the South Huron Panthers. Both teams won semi-final play-off games Thursday at home to gain berths in the championship game. The Vikings defeated Stratford Central 36-7 while the Panthers were beating Listowel 30-3. Jimmy the Greek would have a hard time setting the odds on Saturday's champion- ship game. The Panthers finished first and were undefeated while the only blemish on the Vikings' record was a 2-1 loss to Exeter in a game which could have gone either way, a game in which the Vikings' top offen- sive runner, Rob Gibbons, did not play. On the season, Exeter scored 207 points and gave up 18 while the Vikings scored 212 and surrendered 24. Rob Gibbons. who ran for n total of 256 yards against Stratford Central, scored the game's first touchdown Thursday on a 75 yard sweep in the first quarter. He also scored the final touchdown of the game in the fourth quarter on a six yard dive Gib- bons, in five games this season, has amass- ed a total yardage of 1028. The Vikings' elusive tailback has been aided by good blocking by the offensive line and other run - ling backs and he will be a key part of the Vikings' game plan in Saturday's champion- ship contest. Dave Alrnasi also had two touchdowns against Central, the first on a 22 yard pass and run play from quarterback Steve Bugler, the other on a fumble recovery in the end zone. Dave McCallum got the other Goderich major on another Stratford fum- ble in the end zone in the second quarter. Shawn Larder kicked four converts and Kevin Talbot caught a two-point conversion pass for the Vikings. Central got their toucnuown on a nye-yara sweep by Ron Costanzo in the third quarter. A missed field goal attempt in the second quarter accounted for the other Stratford point when the Vikings gave up the single. The Vikings had a total offence of 417 yards in the game, piling up 17 first downs. They had great success with their inside running after Central had shut down their outside running attack. Quarterback Steve Bugler threw completion of 22, 29 and 35 yards on a new passing play instituted by Viking coaches Bruce Baker and Bill Car- row. The Viking defence, besides accounting for two of the Goderich touchdowns, carne up with its usual strong game and will be another key factor in the Vikings' cham- pionship bid Saturday. Goals were scored by Jana Pearson, Tammy Kieffer and Patty Knight. Brussels bounced back to tie the game and then forty seconds took the lead and held on to win 6-5. They emerged victorious again winning by a score of 10 - 1. However, the score really did not indicate the calibre of play as the locals scrambled around most of the game and did not play up to their potential until the last few minutes of the game. The Lucan goalie really had an off night. • Goderich scored twice in the first period, goals going to Mark Burbine and Darrell Durnin with assists to Bill Trebish, Shawn Larder and Larry Leppington. Richard Bondy opened the scoring for Goderich five minutes into the first period, assisted by Mark Burbine and Ian MacKinnon. Byron Bowman added number 2, assisted by Scott Garrow, a minute and a half later. Then Ilderton countered with their first. Scott Garrow then took the puck from the face off, stick -handled through the Ilderton defence, deeked their goalie and popped in number three for Goderich. Goderich added five more goals in the final period while holding Ilderton at bay. Goal scorers were Bowman with three, Garrow with five, Boddy three, Duncan two and Burbine, Larder and Parent with one each. Lions defeat Lucan Goderich Lions PeeWees split games last weekend with a win over Lucan on Sunday, and a heartbreaking loss to Ilderton on Saturday. At home last Saturday against Ilderton the Lions dropped a 3-2 decision to the visitors in a fast, exciting game. After a scoreless first period, Greg Alcock of the Lions gave Goderich a 1-0 lead late in the se- cond period, but Ilderton was able to tie the contest with just 10 seconds remaining in the period. With just two minutes gone in the third period, Ilderton took the lead 2-1 only to have Andre Cauchi of the locals tally on a perfect pass from the corner by Shawn Talbot. The winning marker was scored with five minutes left to play and the Lions playing two men short. The Lions tried frantically to tie the game but time ran out. Even though Goderich lost this game, they skated and checked hard all night with their efforts not paying off in goals, as the Ilderton goalie made numerous saves for his team. In Lucan Sunday the locals scored two late third period goals to edge the hometowners 4-3. Each team notched a goal in the first period with Tim Harrison tying it at one with the assists to Brian Lane and Jeff Boyce. In the second, Lucan took a 3-1 lead but Tim Harrison who sparked the locals, scored his second goal of the night with Chris O'Neil assisting.
