Celebrathrig their birthdays were Gordon Drennan, Lloyd Zinn, Muriel An- drew, Dr. Robert MCCesh and Verde Denonntne. The Manor was quite a spooky place on Halloween with lots of tiny ghosts, goblins, witches and little devils running around. In the morning, Mrs. Evy McDonagh's nursery school class visited and in the afternoon, Victoria Public School's kindergarten class came over with their teacher, Mrs: Beth Wark. The residents toured the countryside on October 18, for their annual fall colour trip. Their bus driver, Everitt Robinson, went the extra distance to make the trip interesting and enjoyable for everyone. The residents had the opportunity to go to the Senior's , Communion at St. George's Anglican Church. On their arrival at the church, they were each presented with a lovely corsage and after communion, were treated to a luncheon in the church hall. The Maitland Manor residents' annual bazaar and' tea was held on Saturday, November 5 and was extremely well attend- ed. Winners of the draw were: Daisy Scott who won the Christmas wreath; Margaret MacDonald, a resident of the Manor who won the pillow cases; the silk flower ar- rangement went to Joyce Bentley; and last but not least, the ceramic planter, made by the residents, was won by Madeline Mom- uette. We would like to thank everyone who orated items for the bazaar, those who worked at the bazaar, those who attended, and the kitchen staff at the Manor for the tea and luncheon, On behalf of the residents, we wish to say a special thank you to Cathy Wiebe, the Ac- tivity Director, for all of her hard work and effort in organizing the bazaar. A new activity has begun at the Manor. Karen Kirk is holding a baking club for the residents. This will give the ladies an oppor- tunity to again try out some of their favourite old recipes on each other. A fond farewell to Margaret Swan of the Manor's housekeeping department. Mrs. Swan has retired after 14 years of working at the Manor. Saturday was her last day. The annual bazaar and tea held by the residents of Maitland Manor was well attended on Saturday. Here, one of the shoppers at the bazaar selects some ceramic items made by the residents for purchase. (Photo by Joanne Buchanan) Goderich native presents research at conference Carolyn Watters, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. W.N. Watters of Goderich, recently presented a paper at the first Canadian conference on design of very large scale integrated (VLSI) microchips. The con- ference was hosted by the University of Waterloo. VLSI refers to new methods that shrink the size of and squeeze more computing power into the silicon chip that is driving the personal computer and other technological revolutions. Better VLSI design methods are needed because present methods are too slow, unreliable and expensive. Carolyn, who received her education in Goderich and at the University of Western Ontario in London, is one of the researchers with the department of applied mathematics at the Technical University of Nova Scotia in Halifax. These researchers are developing easy-to-use software in an attempt to simplify the VLSI design process. In an article appearing in the October 28th business section of the Globe and Mail, writer David Helwig reported that it took Carolyn only three weeks to develop a software package for interactive chip design, working with the university's Applied Microelectronics Institute. The system, which produces VLSI designs from logic diagrams, was implemented without an expensive work -station or a I' STATE FARM Cab' LCO INSURANCE _ FOR INSURANCE CALL BILL BARWICK AGENT Jae KINGSTON ST. "The intention of this,..is to encourage both computer, science and engineering students to develop their own design systems as part of their involvement with VLSI. Such basic involvement permits demystification of computer-assisted chip design for both egineering and non - engineering students," Carolyn said in her paper presented to the conference. Four students at the University of Waterloo have developed a prototype compiler (computer program) which designs silicon circuits about 10 times faster than available design aids, according to Professor Mohamed Elmasry, director of the university's VLSI circuits group. The compiler's user-friendly software allows circuit masks to be produced automatically from logic equations, although the user can intervene to make changes during the process. The University of Waterloo intends to spend about 35 per cent of a $1,622,000 federal grant for development of VLSI design tools. About 30 per cent of the grant, announced by the university two weeks ago, will be spent to design microchips. The remaining 35 per cent will be used to develop new simulation tools to evaluate VLSI designs. Dungannon United Church On Sunday, October 30, flowers were placed in the church by Rev, Roberts and family in memory of a dear friend, Mattie Philips of Aberavon, Port Talbot, Wales, in the United Kingdom, who passed away on October 21. On November 6 a service of Remembrance DUN ANN - N DOINGS Merits Perko 15219-77113 was held in Dungannon United Church. The choir sang two anthems, Hold the Port, and Something to Sing About. Ann Feagan of Nile recited the poem, hi Flanders Fields. Rev. Roberts spoke on, God speaking through War andoMemorles. The minister and congregation joined in, An Act of Remembrance. The Boundaries Advisory Committee of Huron -Perth Presbytery met on November 3 in Blyth United Church. None of the problems presented were discussed to an ultimate conclusion. After a suggested motion, it was decided the committee should' meet again with representatives from the churches concerned. The meeting was adjourned without any action or proposed action being made. The flowers in both Dungannon and Nile churches on November 6 were placed in loving memory of Pearl Agnes Watson, whose death occurred last Monday. The congregation extends sincere sympathy to Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Hodges and family and other relatives.
