It has "Sharing Joy" is theme for annual UCW rally The 22nd annual rally of West Huron Region of Huron -Perth Presbyterial was held in North Street Church, Goderich on Wednesday, October 5. Eighty ladies registered for the day: The theme was "Sharing Joy" based on John 15:2: "Jesus said; These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full." Mrs. Marilyn Verbeek, President, welcomed all. The opening song, "Praise the Lord, 0 You His People", was sung followed by prayer. With Mrs. Ila Worst 11 at the piano and Mrs. Jean Hanly as leader, a lovely sing- song was enjoyed. All the songs expressed "Joy". The North Street President, Mrs. Nancy Pickell, welcomed everyone warmly. Mrs. Grace Pamn, President of Huron - Perth Presbyterial, brought greetings and challenged everyone to start "Bible Study Groups". The study book for 1984 is "Jesus Means Life". Two projects still needing help are the "Medical Electives Program" and "Seeds for Zaire". The annual business meeting will be held in Stratford at St. John's Church on Monday, Janaury 23. Mrs. Jean Hanly gave the treasurer's report and also the budget for 1984 which is only increased by $75, so the allocations are not changed. She urged all to keep up giv- ings, closing with the remark, "Takers may eat better, but givers sleep better." Mrs. Leila Finkbeiner spoke of some of the books' she had for sale in the church basement. Victoria Street ladies presented a skit, "Who - Me?". It was introduced by Mrs. Mary Currell and those taking part were Mrs. Vernan Smith, Mrs. Douglas Robinson, storage for 700,000 bushels of grain and there are several more weeks of harvesting left. Mrs. Ross Harrison, Mrs. Ben Freeman and Mrs. John Boa. Two lovely- duets -were sung by Marty Lobb and Elaine Bechtel from the Holmesville church. The Bible Study, "Sharing Joy", was led by the Nile women. Mrs. Karen Roberts in- troduced it and pointed out the different meanings of joy in the Old and New Testaments. Group leaders were Mary Stoll, Myrtle Kerr, Shirley Dustow, Karen Roberts, Willetta McWhinney and Cora Sherwood. After discussions, each group reported their findings. After singing grace, the ladies retired to the basement where the ladies of North Street served a delicious dinner. The afternoon session was opened with worship led by Trinity ladies. Those taking part were Mrs. David Hackett, Mrs. Jim Hunter and Mrs. Alex Hackett. The offering was received by four Auburn ladies and prayer of dedication was by Mrs. Elva Armstrong. Mrs. Phyllis Fisher of Benmiller UCW in- troduced the speaker, Mrs. Iva Wood of Goderich. Mrs. Wood brought a very in- spiring message on the theme "Sharing Joy". The Reverend Ken Bauman of Blyth lead in singing several songs and ended with a solo, "It is no Secret". The roll call was answered by 10 presidents telling, "A humorous incident or story your U.C.W. experienced." Mrs.Mary Currell invited Huron West Region to hold their next rally at the Vic- toria St. Church in 1984. Mrs. June Robinson of Donnybrook gave the courtesies. The hymn, Lord, Dismiss us with Thy Blessing, was sung and prayer by Mrs. Verbeek closet a very inspiring, uplif- ting day. S;. A sale and exhibition of spinning and weaving will be held at the River Mill in Benmiller this Saturday, November 5 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.. and Sunday, November 6 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. This event is spon- sored by the Huron Tract Spinners and Weavers Guild. WI `T There was a fair attendance at the Tiger Dunlop Women's Institute meeting held Thursday, October 27 in the Colborne Township Hall. The meeting opened with the president, Mrs. R. Buchanan, presiding and welcoming all. Members were pleased to see a few other members present who had been absent on account of sickness. Everyone joined in the opening exercises of the Opening Ode, Mary Stewart Collect and 0 Canada with Mrs. G. Knitting at the piano. The roll call, "A healthful food which orginates from Canadian agriculture", brought many varied answers. Minutes of the last meeting were read by the assistant secretary -treasurer, Mrs. Dorothy Feagan and correspondence was read and attended to. An invitation was received to attend the Goderich Township Women's Institute meeting November 14. A letter was read from the Huron Day Centre for the Homebound and it was decided to try and hear one of their speakers in the next year. Members were informed that the 4-H Achievement Night for the project, "Looking Great, Feeling Great" will be Tuesday, November 8 at 7 p.m. at Brookside School. Social News Visiting at the Corkum home in the village for the weekend was Shan Thomas from Sarnia. Barb and Don Harrower from Holly, Michigan spent the weekend at their cottage in the village. History Facts Maurice Dalton of Kingsbridge was the first Assessor of Huron and Bruce Counties. He assessed land at a penny an acre. He was also the first Reeve of Ashfield Township. Church News A large congregation was in attendance for the 2 p.m. service at Christ Anglican Church in Port Albert. The Reverend Robert Crocker, in his sermon, spoke about "Forgiveness". Members were pleased to learn that through the efforts of Mrs. Marjorie Emerson, . their coffee maker has been repaired by a firm in London. Tiger Dunlop WI will be in charge of the Huronyiew birthday party November 16 and is to supply cupcakes and a hall hour program. It is hoped that many of the members will plan to attend this and help. The Institute got in a supply of new handbooks so each member present received one. Mrs. Buchanan voiced her appreciation to the ladies who helped at the Huronview bazaar on October 12. Besides herself, they were Mrs. Donna Young, Mrs. Cora Sher- wood and Mrs. Helen Stoll. She also thanked all who helped with the lunch for the Cun- ningham funeral. Business being attended to, the meeting was turned over to Mrs. Ruth Brock and Mrs. Dorothy Feagan who were in charge of the program. Mrs. Feagan gave the motto, speaking on success and stated that success depends on one's character and everything one does. Mrs. Brock chose the topic, "Cheese", and in an interesting way, she talked of the origin, the ingredients, where it is made, the times for aging various kinds and general facts about this very important food, giving many useful hints about keeping it in good condition. Mrs. Brock then introduced a guest and friend she had recently met, Mrs. Gilby, who displayed some of her hooked pictures, wall hangings and braided mats. This was interesting and educational. The meeting closed with the Closing Ode and Grace and members enjoyed a tasty lunch of fresh apple cider, dainty biscuits and cheese with raw fruit served by Mrs. Cora Sherwood, Mrs. Minnie McNeil and Mrs. Margaret Jewell. Winners of the draw were Mrs. Marguerite Horton, Mrs. Donna Young, Mrs. Ann Montgomery and Mrs. Hendrick. Happy birthday was sung to Mrs. Minnie McNeil who also received a nice gift from a friend.
