Garden Club
The Goderich Garden Club met in Robert-
son School October 19 with the vice-
president, Elsa Hayden in the chair. The
minutes of the ' September meeting were
read and approved. The treasurer's report
was also given and approved.
In the correspondence, members were ad-
vised to order their logo pins and windshield
stickers immediately. There was also a let-
ter from the Bicentennial Committeetin
Waterford stating they specialbut on

It was drawn tothagoattention By°anche
meeting that a year
Pownall -Garrett had been the guest speaker
at the Garden Club meeting with her display
of jams and jellies made from weeds and
wild flowers. About a month ago, Mrs.
Pownall -Garrett died and the Garden Club
members wished to send their sympathy to
her son and daughter.
The door prize, which was an African
violet, was won by Bess Smith.
The guest speaker for the evening was
Debra Perkin. She is a conservation and
education .technician at Maitland Valley
Conservation Authority. Miss Perkin spoke
and showed slides on the work -the Authority
does. Maitland Valley covers 32
municipalities).
Her first pictures were on flooding in the
area and how the Authority overcomes this.
It can be accomplished with dams or by
tearing down houses and making the area
into a park so if there is flooding, the
damage won't be as great to property. The
Authority now has green boxes along the
rivers which indicate the potential of flood
danger. putting in
Erosion can be controlled by p g
Gabion baskets or just lining a river bank
with stones. Planting trees along a river is
another way to prevent erosion. Tree plan-
tings are done by Boy Scouts very often as
well as by machines in areas where trees
will beautify the land and prevent erosion.
Water testing is one of the Authority's jobs
to make sure there are no pollutants enter-
ing theriverand if so, rvat on Authority
the source.

Miss Perkin is a very vivacious person
and her presentation was much enjoyed by
the group. She was thanked by Irene Todd
and presented with a gift. be in Robertson
