Synod to elect bishop
Bishop T.D.B. Ragg has announced that a
special Diocesan Synod to elect a coadjutor
bishop will be held Saturday, November 26
in St. Paul's Cathedral. London.
At Huron's spring Synod, the date for the
election of a coadjutor was planned for May
1984, with Bishop Ragg's retirement to take
effect the end of next year.
However, on the advice of his physician,
Bishop Ragg now plans to retire on April,
1,1984.
The election will allow a breaking -in
period for the coadjutor bishop to work with
Bishop Ragg before assuming full
responsibility for episcopal oversight of the
Diocese.

Huron presently has two suffragan
bishops: Rt. Rev. Morse Robinson and Rt.
Rev. Derwyn Jones - but only a coadjutor
has the right of succession upon retirement
or death of the diocesan bishop.
Bishop Ragg told delegates to the Synod in
May 1983 that he wanted a coadjutor bishop
to provide continuity in the episcopacy.
Following the sudden death of Bishop
Carman Queen in February 1974, Bishop
Ragg was elected eighth Bishop of Huron
five months after his election as suffragan,
leaving the Diocese without a diocesan
bishop during that interval.
Both Huron's suffragan bishops are
eligible for nomination as coadjutor bishop.
