Varna rider Chuck Collins finished the series in third position. The standings stacked up as follows: Mike Hamden, a Honda Canada rider finished first with 150 points. Second was former B.C. Expert, now from Oshawa, Mike Rensby with 123 points; and with 107 points, Bully Gully sponsored rider Collins came in third. The next competitor was back with 86 points. Chuck began racing back in 1973 at the age of 9, and moved through the motocross ranks from schoolboy class to "exert" level. Riding under No. 191, and with the backing of Bully Gully, where he is also race director, Chuck has managed to overcome injthes and other obstacles to finish in the top three in the province. Earlier hi the season, Chuck and his mechanic father, Randy, toured the country in events like the Toronto Supercross, the Expert Nationals and the Calgary Supercross. Next year, Chuck's looking forward to an even better season, and already he's looking at ways to make his bikes work better and go faster, and he's getting all the physical bugs out as well. Motocross is a physically GODERICH SIGNAL AR, WEDNESDAY, OCKSER 195S -PAGE 3A ee in 0 tarso demanding sport and some say the most demanding in the world, exceeding even soccer. It requires daily work-outs to be able to maintain the stamina to go as long as 40 minutes full -out in the longer races. At 19, Chuck has reached high, but there's always next year and a little higher. Chuck is also an apprentice mechanic at Hully Gully and after completing his ap- prenticeship next spring, will be dividing his mechanical and racing duties with the organizing and teaching of motocross schools and seminars across Western Ontario. Snowmobile grass drag racing Sunday Hully Gully Sports of Varna, Ontario has announced a $1,000 purse to the modified classes of the special racing snowmobiles at October 30th's Ontario Championship. The snowmobile grass drag series will climax in the provincial championships being held at Hully Gully on Sunday, October 30, and besides regular cash paybacks that the Modifieds normally race for, an extra $1,000 has been put up for this prestigious race. The modified snowmobiles are the ones that sanctioning bodies allow to make certain performance, suspension and track modifications for faster speeds than the stock classes. ha fact, the wild open modified classes are an anything goes situation. The Open Modifieds are very low slung, with very powerful engines -- usually in excess of 100 horsepower. They are also capable of hitting in the neighborhood of 100 miles per hour from a standing start in just an eighth of a mile. And all this on grass! The Ontario Championships will also feature a real -crowd pleaser - watercross. It's a sport that the name describes best. Snowmobiles get a running start, and then hit the water. From that point on, they plane across the water on their skis and track. World record holder Greg Balchan is expected for this event, as well as other pros and some amateur participants. One of the other attractions is a three- wheeler all terrain vehicle drag event. The racing begins Sunday morning at 10:30, with the professional classes begin- ning around 12:00. Hully Gully is north of London, between Hensall and Clinton, off Highway 4.
