BY T.D.

prove as shown by their 42-9 victory in

ings victory. Tammy Gibbons stole the ball
four times in the first quarter and Sarah
Alexander and Jennifer Peters forced
several other turnovers. Despite their
strong defensive play, the Vikings did not
take advantage of the control they had over
the game with as much scoring as their
coach Lynn Meyers would like to have seen.
Rookies Katharine Murphy, Jenny Allan
and Mary Catherine Stapleton all had good
games. giving 11/lever' the nrnmiof
another strong team next season.

with 12 points. Katharine Murphy had 10.

Goderich Bantams lose
season openers to
Exeter and Parkhill
BY C. B.
Last Wednesday evening the Goderich
Elevator Bantams travelled to Exeter to
play their second scheduled game of this
season. Exeter defeated the locals 5 -1.
The first period was fairly evenly mat-
ched with Exeter scoring the only goal.
Bill Trebish opened the scoring for
Goderich shortly after the beginning of the
second period, with assists going to Darren
Stanbury and Darrell Durnin. Before the
period ended Exeter scored two more
unanswered goals.
In the third period Exeter added another
two goals. Although the Goderich team was
close on numerous occasions, they just
couldn't offset the superb net minding of the
Exeter goalie.
Frustration was evident, especially in the
third period, as the Goderich boys drew the
majority of the penalties, eight in total for
the game as opposed to five by Exeter.
On Saturday the boys entertained their
counterparts from Lucan. It was a fast
skating, close checking contest that saw
Goderich emerge victorious on a score of 5 -
0. Jay Williamson went all the way in net
earning the shutout.
Tom Bean opened the scoring for
Goderich assisted by Scott Garrow in the
first period. The second period was
scoreless. Goderich added four more goals
in the last period, two by each of Shawn
Larder and Scott Garrow with assists going
to Chris White, Mark Burbine and Gary Erb.
On Sunday the team travelled to Parkhill
where they were defeated 5 - 4.
Parkhill scored the only gaol in the first
period. In the second period Darrell Durnin
tied it up at the 8:40 mark assisted by Hod
Nurse and Bill Trebish. Parkhill made it 2 -1
before the period ended. In the third period
Parkhill quickly scored again to lead 3 - 1.
Shawn Larder scored at the 9:48 mark
assisted by Dave Duncan and Rod Nurse.
Parkhill notched another to again lead by
two. Goderich retaliated with three quick
goals to tie it at 4 - 4. Byron Bowman scored
one, assisted by Scott Garrow and Tom
Bean and Scott Gamow scored assisted by
Bowman and Bean.
Before the period ended Parkhill scored
their fifth and winning goal with slightly
more than one minute remaining.
Goderich drew a total of 30 penalty
minutes in the game while Parkhill chalked
up 20.

Viking defence hold
Redmen to 64 yards
BY T.D.
The GDCI senior Vikings remain
undefeated in Huron Perth Conference foot-
ball play following their 42-0 whitewashing
of the Central Huron Redmen last Thursday
in Clinton. The Vikings scored 21 points a
half enroute to their fifth consecutive vic-
tory.
The Viking offence gained over 400 yards
in total, over 300 on the ground and another
120 yards via the air. The offensive line
created holes big enough for the proverbial
Mack truck to drive through and that, com-
bined with some strong running and block-
ing by backs and some accurate passing by
John Thompson to sure -handled receivers
jed by Andrew Telford, accounted for the
potency of the Viking attack.
The Viking defence held the Redmen to 64
yards total offence. Strong efforts along the
line, and by the linebackers and backs all
contributed to the success of the defence.
Six different players scored Viking
touchdowns. Ed Craig went over on a nine
yard sweep in the first quarter. Kevjn'Deatt
tie and Jeff Feagan scored second quarter
majors on six and 12 yard runs.
Andrew Telford was the receiver on a 75
yard pass and, run play from, John Thomp=
son in the third quarter and Thoinspon
scored another touchdown on a one yard
dive before the quarter ended.
The Vikings' other touchdown came on a
53 yard punt return by Ken Van Osch in the
fourth quarter. This touchdown brought
smiles to the faces of Viking coaches Ra
Donnelly and1Chris Connor.
"It was nice to see our punt return team
beginning to show the results of the hours we
have spent in practice," conunented Don-
nelly.
Joe Melady had another perfect day, kick-
ing all six conversion attempts successfully.
This Thursday the Norwell Redmen play
here in a game that will determine first
place. The Redmen are 4-1 and a win over
the 5-0 Vikings would give Norwell first
place in the standings.
Rob Gibbons gains a total
of 310 yards in 10 carries
BY T.D.

hold on second place in the Huron Perth
Conference football standings with a 33-7

sweep by Sandy McDonald. McDonald also

bons gained 310 yards on only 10 carries.

fence, causing numerous turnovers. Chris
Sideris had a strong game at defensive and
his counterpart on the other side, Kevin
Haggitt, is showing great improvement
each time out.
Coaches Bruce Baker and Bill Garrow
plant t work on their specialty teams this
week. Both coaches know how important
these teams can be.,in the upcoming Huron -
Perth Conference playoffs.

BY T.D.

lost four of six games in Mitchell last Tues-
day.
The Vikings lost their opening game by a
close 15-13 score to Mitchell but then took a
15-12 victory in their next game. A strong
spiking attack by Stratford Northwestern
resulted in a 15-8 victory for the Huskies.
The Vikings played better in their second
encounter but lost 15-12. Clinton ran over the
Vikings 15-0 in their first game but coach
Tom Kelly's squad rebounded for a 15.8 vic-
tory over Central Huroathe rematch.

Pee Wees win two and lose
one in first week of play
The Goderich Lions Pee Wee's completed
a gruelling first week of the league schedule
with two wins and one loss. With four games
under their belts now, the local's record
stands at two wins, one loss, one tie for five
points.
Last Wednesday in Exeter, the Lions
started slow and gained momentum as the
game progressed, but it took five third
period goals to sink the opposition 6 -0. Point
getters were Andre Cauchi with four assists,
Jeff Hodges two goals, George Sideris one
goal, Shawn Talbot had one goal and one
assist, Chris O'Neill netted one goal, one
assist, Tim Harrison got one goal and one
assist, and Brian Lane got one assist. Pat
Donnelly and Shaun Currie shared the
shutout.
The Lions strength this year is the way
they pass the puck and this strength was
very much in evidence in Parkhill Friday as
they dropped the hometowners 11 - 0. The
locals used five goals in the second and third
periods for the win. Point getters in this
contest were Chris O'Neill with two goals,
three assists; George Sideris three goals,
one assist: Tim Harrison two goals, two
assist, Brian Lane one goal, two assists;
Greg Alcock one goal, two assists; Gregg
DeWinter one goal; Jeff Boyce three
assists; Shawn Talbot one goal; Lonnie
Rumig two assists; Rob Dempsey two
assists; Jeff Hodges one assist. Donnelly
and Currie shared the shoutout.
Slow first period starts finally caught up
to the Lions at home Saturday as Lucan
tallied three goals in 15 seconds with two
minutes remaining in the period and then
held on for a6-2win.
The Lions had numerous chances to come
back and take the lead but a strong
goaltending performance spoiled the bid to
defeat the PeeWees.
Goderich got a goal from Jeff Hodges with
Shawn Talbot,,and Andre Cauchi assisting.
Tim Harrison tallied a third period goal with
Jason Million and Chris O'Neill assisting.
With the most demanding part of the
schedule behind them, a properly rested
Lions team will be able to give their best
shot in each game for the rest of the season.
Next game will be in Strathroy next
Saturday before returning home the
following Saturday with a contest against
Ilderton.
Goderich Garb and Gear defeated
The Goderich Garb and Gear Novices
were defeated their first two games out by
Strathroy, losing the first game 12-1 and the
second one 8-0. Goderich's only goal came
from Bryan Hodge.
The Goderich team could use the excuse
as being in the rebuilding stages this year
while Strathroy `lhas almost all of their
players back from last year.
The Garb and Gear coaches feel that the
team is making steady progress and should
be ready to give a good showing in their up
coming game on Saturday.
