Home saves
time, energy
• from page 13
For example, instead of running the air
conditioner all night, you can program it to
go off two hours after you go to bed. You
can also program the heat or air condition-
ing to turn off after the house empties in
the morning, and come on one hour before
the first person gets home.
"Eventually, as control becomes in-
tegrated throughout the house, appliances
will be able to talk to each other. This will
enable the system to offer even more
energy and cost savings," Mr. Francis
comments.
"For instance, the washing machine will
tell the hot water heater exactly how many
gallons 6f water it will need for the loads it
will wash, and the precise temperature it
requires. The water heater will then supp-
ly only the required amount, thus saving
the energy required to keep a full tank con-
stantly heated."
Security
The home control system can also deal
with home security. If a fire breaks out,
the system would wake occupants with an
alarm, automatically call the fire depart-
ment and then — using a synthesized voice
— recommend the safest route out.
In the case of a burglary, the system
could be programmed to signal an alarm,
turn lights on throughout the house and
call police for help. If nobody were home,
the system could call the homeowner at
the office and deliver the message that the
alarm had been sounded.
Electronic `servants'
In essence home control will be an elec-
tronic "staff of servants," monitoring and
controlling virtually the entire house.
Everything from outdoor sprinklers and
lights to audio and video systems to kit-
chen appliances will be controllable with
the touch of a few buttons, adding conve-
nience and saving time for almost every
household function.
GE plans to introduce pieces of the
system in 1984. As various modules are ad-
ded, consumers will be able to buy only the
parts that suit their needs and budget. No
matter how many modules become
available, however, the TV remains the
key component.
"The TV will be the control center for
the entire system," Mr. Francis explains.
"It will include microprocessors, tuners
and the ability to generate characters on
the screen, and it will be the terminal for
all the add-on modules and the telephone
tie-in.
"What we are seeing is the development
of a product that could eventually change
the way we live. The result will be a better
standard of living, as home control will
save time, energy and money."

recover some heat from the air that is
usually exhausted. All the attention to
energy saving results in a 60 to 70 percent
reduction in heating costs according to
Hulbert.
The house is affordable, he says, not
because it is cheap to build but because it
makes efficient use of building materials,
space and land. It's accessible and adap-
table because the primary living space on
the main floor makes it possible for the oc-
cupant to live exclusively on that level.
There is a kitchen, living -dining room,
bathroom and storage space on the first
floor.
But the bedroom could be a dining room
and Hulbert says the main floor can be ex-
panded in three ways. A garage or carport
can be added in front; a master bedroom
off the side, and a room off the back which
