travel, as little as 5.5 passenger kilometers
There are countless ways that the use of
t ,,autbile can be reduced or even
e ptled.
Many of these help, We both energy and
money. But the advantages don't stop
there. Often they are of direct benefit to
health, as in cycling or walking. Travelling
by train provides not only. the opportunity
to relax but also to read or prepare for that
business meeting. Taking public transit
eliminates the need to find a parking
space. Socializing with others in your car
pool can be yet another bonus of saving
energy. Car pooling also reduces traffic
congestion and pollution. In addition, using
a car pool extends the life of your car and
can even eliminate the need for a second
car.
The energy saved by using alternative
methods of transportation is substantial.
Compare:
+ A large car with one occupant may
per ll.
+ A sub compact with, 4 occupants may
travel 55 passenger kilometrers per litre.
+ A full bus or train may travel as much
as 70 passenger kilometers per litre.
The financial savings that can be ah-
cieved by reducing or eliminating the use
of your automobile are substantial. For
example, above and beyond the initial cost
of purchasing your car, the yearly expense
of owning and maintaining it may be as
high as $2,650. As the cost of gasoline
soars, so will your operating costs. That
financial investinent will pay for a lot of
bus, taxi and train rides with money left
over for the occasional car rental.
Of course, the area in which you live will
determine, to- some extent, your
automobile needs. However, do consider
the alternatives - they save both energy
and money.

Check all systems for problems
The battery is just one part of an
automobile's charging system. Just
because a car starts sluggishly — or
doesn't start at all — it doesn't always
mean that the battery is the culprit. Some
other electrical component might be drain-
ing the battery of power. A faulty alter-
nator, starter, voltage regulator, cables
and terminals — even something as inno-
cent as a belt — can all interfere with a
car's starting ability.
Electrical system
With winter weather approaching, give
some extra thought to checking out your
car's electrical system. Doing this as part
of your winterizing schedule could save
you from frustrating moments w the cold
mornings. Here's a checklist of areas to
have your serviceman examine before the
cold weather hits:
1. Battery. Most battery failures are
caused by problems in other areas of the
electrical system. But, you should still
check to be sure your battery has the elec-
trical capacity to perforrn up to specifica-
tions. A load test is the basic test of a bat-
tery's starting capacity.
Power varies
The power required to start an engine
varies from car to car. Itdepends on the
number of RPMs the engine requires,
compression ratio, cylinder wear,
temperature, weight of the oil and the
number and variety of accessories on the
vehicle.
If the test performed on your battery
determines you need a replacement, in-
stall a unit with at least as much starting
power as the original equipment battery as
shown in the car manual. If you want add-
ed starting insurance, choose a battery
with a higher cold cranking rating.
2. Worn belts or loose fan belts can slip,
causing a voltage shortage to the battery.
The drives for your alternator, water
pump and other systems must be main-
tained at all times. You or your ser-
viceman can visually check for glazing,
cracking, splits, oil and contamination.
But, because of the types of belts found on
most cars today, even the best of
mechanics can't always spot a failing belt.
So, as a rule of thumb, if your belts are
four years or older, replace them — even if

clinics allow the women to gain hands-on
experience with the automobile.
Students learn how to give symptoms of
automotive difficulties which can help any
service facility diagnose the problem and
repair it properly the first time.
Some also teach how to react in
emergency situations, such as changing a
flat tire or how to jump a battery.
This knowledge can reduce inconve-
nience, save money and help keep the car
running trouble-free.
