The regular meeting of the Goderich
Rotary Club was held Tuesday, October 25
at 12:15 at the Bedford Hotel. John Hayman
and Bill Elliot were welcomed back from a
European holiday.
Preparations are Well advanced for the
Rotary Ball on November 12. Tickets are
still available from Dr. Tom Jasper. This
year's theme is "Fabulous Forties". Dress
is formal or informal.
The London Symphony Orchestra and
Royal Canadian Air Farce provided an
exciting program at GDCI recently,
sponsored by the Rotary Club. The next
event is December 10 at North Street United
Church with the Harbouraires of Goderich.
Chris Borgal, an architect who has been
on exchange to Uganda where conditions
are somewhat hectic, was the speaker at
Tuesday's meeting. He spent time in
Campala and outlined the living conditions
in this part of Africa. He said political strife
continues and there is a great need for
medical services for the 12 million people.
Inflation is very high with 10 gallons of gas
costing $65.
Chris spent most of his time in restoration
work after the 1979 destruction. Picturesque
scenery was evident from the slide
presentation but many areas in the cities
have been devastated by the ravages of war
and unrest. Schools are now being
recognized however and provide some hope
for future generations. Canada has provided
school supplies for the school system. Tribal
unrest will likely persist for some time
though, Chris concluded.
11 was a pumpkin ffor everyone! The Municipal Day Nursery set two
mornings aside to take the children to Evan's Food Market's
pumpkin patch where every child got to choose a pumpkin that they
wanted. if the child decided that they only wanted a little one, they
were given a bigger pumpkin as well. This is the fourth year that
the Evan's pumpkin patch has had visitors from schools. Holding a
giant pumpkin, with the help of her grandfather, Ken Boyce, is
Tabitha Roulston while Matthew Denomme chose a smaller one.
