I think the last seven days - up to and in-
cluding Monday - have had more fun and ex-
citement in them than I've had in many a
week! - month -?
I believe fun and laughter
rhshould
go along
with you every day. spon-
taneous, quick to feel; quick to grasp and
fun to understand. This is when a smile or
laughter is at its best.
I believe that one should smile - or try - at
all times. "Laugh, clown, laugh - even when
your heart is breaking -" now THAT is real-
ly hard to do. I know - I've tried it.
My dad taught me this, - SMILE! He was
a wonderful person. He FELT your mood,
your laughter - AND your sorrow. He wiped
away the tears and made you laugh - usually
at yourself. I don't want to forget it! There -
I made me cry !
I'm just a softie, I guess - BUT - I do Lke to
laugh - and last Friday night - a fun night -

over 200 people laughed with me. Everyone
came in casual clothes, comfortable shoes
and an expectant gleam in their eyes. That
was the foundation for a fun night - and we
had it.
Three chapters of Beta Sigma Phi planned
together and worked together and their par-
ty was a great success. I count "success" by
what I see as people are leaving the party. If
they are laughing and friendly - and SOBER
- you had a successful party. One they
remember and talk about later with a smile
- and a giggle.
The fashion show left a lot of giggles.
The food before the show was excellent -
the best baked beans I've tasted in YEARS!
After the fashion show, we got into the
FUN games. The unexpected is always good
fun - also there was music that blended in
nicely. I said it blended - as it should. I hate
it when it just takes over and causes
everyone to scream at the top of their lungs
to be heard. With all the excitement and
laughter, you could hear the ..music. It was
just GREAT.
Saturday nite was Abe and Muffin's
thirty-fifth wedding anniversary. You don't
know these people? I'll bet you do! •
When we first met them, they were two
kids very much in love, looking for a small
apartment for the near future. At that time
we were living in a big, old house and they
reserved a section of the upper house and
later made a comfortable apartment there.
Yvonne Moore was a pretty, shy girl who
smiled a lot - later we found her to be full of
fun and with her fun -talking husband, we en-
joyed them very much. What a pair!
Harold Chase was a story teller who could
TELL a story. Full of laughter - Abe - don't
ask me where he acquired the nickname -
was entertaining at all times.
We LOVED them, they were like our kids
and we had a lot of good times together.
They spent some time out on the prairies,
made southern Saskatchewan, south of
Swift Current, their home for a couple of
years or so and began their family. They
have four lovely children. Wendy in London,
Vicki in Kincardine and Carol who lives in
town with her nice husband and a baby who
looks like his mother's side of the family.
Only son Steve, is working for the oil well
companies around Edmonton. THAT boy
was a fine hockey player and everyone lov-
ed him.
Since we have been away part of the year,
we have missed them and the laughter that
goes with them, so our few times together
are precious for us.
We are fortunate to have many friends
who are very dear to us. Even though we
don't see them often, we have shared happy
memories and they are very precious to all
of us.
I must rush - I am going to find out where 1
am going wrong in my travels around Ben -
miller. Perhaps it would be more fun not to
know.
Just had a call and an invitation to go up
top and have a look - so I'll tell you about it
later.
Love, Martha.
P.S. I did it! What a wonderful flight
above Goderich and area. The countryside -
from above - is just beautiful now. The col-
ors are fantastic. My wonderful pilot knew
just what I wanted to see - and there's a lot
to see. Try it sometime. You'll feel wonder-
ful!

Celebrates 90th birthday
Mrs. Ann Elliott of 94 Arthur Street,
Goderich, recently celebrated her 90th
birthday with a family dinner.
She was born on September 27, 1893 in
Ancaster, Ontario to George and Ida Moffat.
She lived in or near Caledonia for most of
her life and was married to that town's Chief
of Police. Following his death, she later
remarried W.E. (Bill) Elliott and moved
with him to Goderich 20 years ago. The late
Mr: Elliott was a well-known newspaper-
man and local historian.
Mrs. Elliott says she has never been
homesick once since moving to Goderich
because "everyone here is so friendly."
She still maintains her own home with the
help of her live-in companion, a niece, Mrs.
Grace Hartwick. Although she spent from
May until July in hospital recovering from a
broken hip, she is proud of the fact that she
For her birthday, Mrs. Elliott received
over 60 cards and many flowers. Present for
her birthday dinner was a step-
granddaugther from Truro, Nova Scotia;
her stepson Art Elliott and his wife Ev; and
several friends from Caledonia. Another
stepson, John Elliott and a stepdaughter,
Florence Whyard, were unable to be present
but sent along their best wishes.
now gets around fine without the use of a
cane and enjoys good health in general.
Mrs. Elliott is a life member of the Knox
Women's Missionary Society (WMS). She
likes to play bridge and Lions TV Bingo as
well as knitting. She also enjoys visiting
with her many friends. She says it is her
friends who have helped to keep her young
along with "just being cheerful and taking
things as they come."
