Thirty- five steers and eight heifers in the show judged by Jim Coupes of ` . ghoul. Sandy Ma01 onald of R.R. 3 Teeswater captured r the Overall Grand Champion the which was hy odonated by Modern Livestock of Clyde, Alberta and presented by Randy Scott. San 's steer was the Grand Champion Steer and Rod McGillivray of R.R. 4 Paisley, showed the Reserve F iota Steer. In the heifer class, two I c' ers from R.R. 3 Teeswater, Steven and Kevin McKague, won the Grand and Reserve Champion Heifer ribbons. In the afternoon, the calves were sold by auctioneer, Jack Riddell, M.P.P., for an average price of 1184.68 per hundred weight - The Huron -Perth 441 Calf Club Sale pur- chased Sandy MacDonald's steer for $1.10 per pound. The reserve steer sold for $1.08 per pound to the Port Elgin Meat Market. Morris Weber bought the Champion Heifer for $1.07 per pound and Rettinger Meat Market purchased the Reserve Champion Heifer for $1.01 per pound. The strong sup- port of all the buyers made for a very suc- cessful sale for the 4=H members. Also contributing to the success of the Show and Sale was the Howick Mutual In- surance Company of Wroxeter which pro- vided each 4-11 member with a pen and Lunch at noon. A special thankyou goes to the Brussels Stockyards for the free use of fulteacilities and to Jack Riddell and Jinn s for their time and effort. show and sale provides a very suc- cessful ending for the 4-H members involv- ed. Everyone who participated and helped to support this 4-H function was a winner. Unemployed to get experience A program to give about 100 young people jobs on Ontario's farms will see the Ministry of Agriculture and Food underwriting half of the cost of their wages under the Youth Secretariat's Winter Experience '83, minister Dennis Timbrell announced recently. The plan is aimed at young people between the ages of 16 and 24 who are ac- tively seeking work and have been unemployed for at least 12 weeks. "This hard-pressed segment of our labor force will have the opportunity to gain valuable experience that could lead to future employment and promote understanding of life on today's farms," Timbrell said. Young people taking part in the program will be employed for periods of 12 to 19 weeks beginning November 1, 1983 and en- ding March 16, 1984. They will be paid $3.50 per hour based on a 40 -hour week with the government and the farmers hiring them splitting the cost. "With the experience they gain, these young workers will have a better chance to find jobs in agriculture; last year, 65 per cent of those in the program stayed on the farm or found other employment," Timbrell said. The program runs during the winter mon- ths to ease unemployment and give the farmer more time to teach and demonstrate general farming practices. The program also offers the chance for farmers to tackle jobs they, might not other- wise be able to do by themselves. Farmers and young people are encourag- ed to apply as early as possible since the amount of funding limits the number who can take part. Matching of interested farmers and available young people will begin October 24,1983. Application forms are available from the local offices of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food, the Farm Labour Pool or by writing: Winter Experience '83, Guelph Agriculture Centre, P.O. Box 1030, Guelph, Ontario N1H 6N1. • from page 6 A AA -Stock Al Schmidt, Gadshill; Kevin Bennewies, Dublin; Gary Silliphant, Brantford.
