Vi ng coaches ,': ope to
get injured players back
BY `1'D
Combine a heavy rainstorm, a quarter-
back
uarterback with his right hand in a cast, 12
fumbles and two touchdowns called back for
penalties and what do you get?
That's not one of the questions on GDCI
junior football coach Bill Garrow's physics
gists this week, but the answer is 7-2. That
was the score when the junior Vikings
defeated the Stratford Northwestern
Huskies Thursday in Stratford. The victory
gives the Vikings a record of three wins and
one loss so far in Huron -Perth Conference
play-
The
layThe score flattered the Huskies as the Vik-
ings controlled the ball most of the time, had
14 first downs and many scoring oppor-
tunities, but they could not put the points on
the scoreboard.
Shawn Larder scored the game's only
touchdown on a seven yard blast in the first
quarter. The other Viking point came on a
fourth quarter 35 yard single kicked by
Dave Almasi. Stratford's two points came
on a fourth quarter safety touch conceded
by the Vikings to gain better field position to
protect their lead.
Stratford had been unable to move the ball
against a stout Viking defence until late in
the game when they marched from their
own 35 yard line to the Vikings one yard line
but that's where the drive stalled on a third
down. It was in the next series of downs that
the Vikings conceded the safety.
Coaches Garrow and Bruce Baker rated
the Vikings performance as "adequate"
considering the conditions, but are looking
forward to getting some of their injured
players back into action this week. One
helpful step will be the removal of the, cast
from quarterback Steve Bugler's throwing
hand.
The Vikings travel to Wingham Thursday
for their next game.
Junior boys' finish first
BY TD
The GDCI junior boys' volleyball team
placed first in a tournament last Tuesday in
St. Marys, winning five of their six games.
In their first match, the Vikings
dominated St. Marys 15-1 and 15.3. In their
next set, the junior Vikings were down 12-3
in their first game with Central Huron, and
were able to come back to tie 15-15, but lost
the closely contested game, 17-15. In the se-
cond game good setting by Pete and Paul
Nivins and a strong spiking attack by
Jurgen Schultz gave Goderich the win, 15-11,
over Clinton. The Vikings defeated Norwell
15-7 and 15-9 in their last match.
The senior Vikings continue to struggle,
splitting games with Clinton, but losing mat-
ches to Norwell and St. Marys.

Perhaps nothing identifies quality draperies as
quickly as French Rolled Pleats. It takes more time to
make them, but the reward is a better -looking
product for years to come. All Universal pleats are

The Mitchell squad was undefeated going
into Wednesday's game, but the Vikings
kept pressure on Mitchell throughout the
game and moved the ball well. Shelley Teal
led the Vikings with 11 points, many of them
from outside the tight Mitchell zone defence.
Sarah Alexander added 10 Viking points,
Jennifer Peters had five, Katharine Murphy
had four and Tammy Gibbons had one point.
The Viking press was the undoing of Strat-
ford Central here Thursday also, keeping
Stratford from moving the ball over centre
court. •
Katharine Murphy, with 14, and Jennifer
Peters, with 10, topped the, Vikings offen-
sively. Sarah Alexander' --hooped eight,
Shelley Teal had six and MaryStapleton and
Tammy Gibbons had four points apiece.
Joanne Campbell and Jenny Allan each had
two points for the winners.
Leanne Thomson, with seven points, was
Stratford's best.
Next action for coach Lynn Meyers' Vik-
ings is here tomorrow (Thursday) against.
Wingham Madill.

Curlers
ready
for season
its opening dinner, Wednesday evening,
November 2. Call Karen Kirk at 524-4624 for
tickets.
This past weekend, a small group of
volunteers helped to shingle one side of the
curling club roof. It's badly in need of
repairs and in trying to keep costs down,
more volunteers are needed this coming
Saturday to finish the other half. If you have
a hammer and an hour or two to spare, you
are needed. Come on curlers — it's your
club!
Although this is the "off-season" for most
of the sporting activities at the Maitland,
there are still lots of things going on! The
golfers and tennis players are few and far
between on these cool crisp days, but there
are lots of people taking advantage of the
lunch time dining facilities and the curlers
are organized and getting things ready for
the winter's activities.
Some reorganization of curling leagues
has been done, with men's night moving to
Tuesday. Jim Bell will be drawmaster for
this league. There will be mixed curling on
Friday (John and Dana Garrett) and Sun-
day evenings (Joan Hibbert and Don
MacKenzie). Johnine Strickland is handling
the Tuesday morning ladies, while Ann
Kuran is looking after the Wednesday even-
ing draw.
George "Low Pockets" Sutton has the In-
dustrial League filled to capacity for
Thursday evenings and Doug Bundy and
Marty Bond are looking after the high
school and public school curlers.
Bob Dempsey is hoping to organize a
"Family Fun League" for Sunday after-
noons and would appreciate some input to
help get this started.
An instructional clinic for new and nearly
new curlers will be held on Saturday,
November 12, and help for those curlers who
would like assistance will be given on Mon-
day evenings beginning November 7. (See
the ad in this week's Signal -Star.)
This Saturday, October 22, the club is
holding its first "Pig Roast" and dance. For
tickets, call Linda Murphy at 524-9185.
The ladies' curling section will be holding

General Meeting
Saturday, Oct. 22nd, 1953
10:00 AM.
In the auditorium of the
GODERICH ARENA
Eve one Welcome
Chess club
Another new season of chess has started.
Last Wednesday night 14 keen chess en-
thusiasts enjoyed an evening of chess at the
Goderich Chess Club. It was good to see the
younger players such as Eric Halla& and
newcomer John Crawford as well as some of
the veterans like club champion John
George and Mike Cox who had an excellent
year last season, moving up into level two.
Next week we will be looking for Tom
Donnelly and John McDonagh as well as
Barry Page and Louis Stadelmann.
The club members meet every Wed-
nesday night at Doug Brindley's house, 160
Regent St., any time after 7:30 p.m. Last
year we had 28 members. It is hoped a lot of
our members will return again this year. We
have people from all age groups and anyone
is welcome to drop in for a game of chess
throughout the year. See if you can
pronounce those exhilarating words check-
mate next Wednesday night.
