Researchers are
making progress
on arthritis
Although arthritis can't be cured — yet —
people with the disease can take comfort in
knowing that medical researchers are mak-
ing progress in understanding their illness.
In only the past few decades, a
remarkable amount has been learned about
how the forms of arthritis differ from each
other in their effects on the body and in their
response to different treatments. Further,
many more new drugs and pharmaceutical
treatment programs have bren developed in
the past five years than were in the 25
previous to that.
Exercises As Well
As well as medications, treatment pro-
grams which involve exercise have also
undergone major revisions as a con-
sequence of this research. More and more
"total" programs are being devised every
year and, today, people with arthritis can be
confident that the program their physician
or specialist determines the best for them
has been refined to an almost infinite
degree.
There is still, however, much to be done
and researchers are working in many pro-
mising new areas.
Inflammation
The complex mystery of inflammation is
closer to being understood that it ever has
been before in history. We know now, for ex-
ample, that the complex chain of events
which result in the inflammatory process
may now be a predictable chain of events
and that there are specific indicators pre-
sent which are providing clear clues to the
paths which must be followed in the future.
Other Research
Other research is also being done on the
genetic, or inherited, aspects of some forms
of arthritis. This work has, in the past,
shown that some people seem to develop or
inherit a tendency toward certain types of
arthritis such as rheumatoid arthritis or
ankylosing spondylitis. Scientists may soon
know why this happens and recent work
hints that their immune systems may have
some subtle defects. It may even be that ar-
thritis in them is more easily "triggered" by
something such as a virus than in other peo-
ple who may not have this defect.
Joint Movement
Scientists are also studying the way in
which joints move and how they respond to
stresses and strains. Ultimately, this
research will help them to develop better
strengthening exercises, changes in posture
or other aids and adaptions that may make
the life of the person with arthritis in the
future much more pleasant and fulfilling.
