The stone foundation will be completed this week and the brickwork will be finished early in the spring. The electric railroad is going ahead, some 70 men being employed on the work of construction. The lot on West Street, adjoining Har- pers' plumbing shop, was offered for sale by auction on Saturday, but not bringing the reserved price, was withdrawn. There were three bids, $500, $600 and $700. The rock dredge has been the past week blasting the rock at the harbor bottom just east of the elevator. The dredge is deepening the channel from the south end of the outside breakwater to the harbor. 50 YEARS AGO Paid attendance exceeded 1,500 at the 75th annual Dungannon Fall Fair this week. A family of six, which had been sup- ported by the town for two years, was deported to Scotland this week. The action was taken after local authorities grew tired of the father's refusal to work. Harold Williams has defeated George Jenner in the final round of the Garrow Trophy tournament at Maitland Golf Club. Town council has received a letter from Rev. J.E. Ford, tendering his resignation as a member of the Goderich Collegiate Institute board. 25 YEARS AGO The population of Goderich is now 6,011— the highest in history—according to figures released today by Assessor Ed Jessop. The new total represents an increase of 236 over last year. Goderich District Collegiate Institute board decided Tuesday to ask the Department of Education for permission to begin plans for an addition of six classrooms plus a gymnasium because of over crowding. In a surprise announcement, Councillor Charles M. Robertson informed town council Friday that he plans to retire from municipal office at the end of this year. A. Lombardo Construction Company of Windsor has been awarded the contract for the building of the quarter million dollar F.W. Woolworth Store on The Square. F.M. ( Monty) Hall, police chief here for 4'42 years, was dismissed Friday by the Goderich Police Commission. The Com- mission is now advertising for a new chief. The salary range offered is $4,800 to $5,200 per year. 5 YEARS AGO About 29 head of cattle were killed or had to be destroyed after the transport truck trailer carrying them crashed through an ':arterpa ay.Y..,•Aya4. , en•""lh i:YGltlli'fat°J4y v. 91 bridge and fell about 30- feet 'Monday. Frightened rattled wandered through town and some eluded pursuers for many hours. All but three of 15 Huron County Board of Education trustees at Monday's board meeting announced plans to seek re- election to the board in November's municipal elections. The Goderich Recreation Board has voted unanimously in favor of continuing the mental retardation integration program that was established in town two years ago. The Huron County Board of Education decided Monday that rather than sell six of its surplus buses, it would offer them to its secondary schools for in-house use. Blyth to upgrade hall After only a few months of fund raising, the Board of Directors of the Blyth Centre for the Arts has reached the halfway point in its campaign to raise $83,000 for the im- provement of the technical facilities of Blyth Memorial Hall. The overwhelming growth of activity at the hall means that much of the equipment has become inadequate for the volume and quality of productions that are presented there year-round. The growth of music programs at the Centre has created a large demand for a grand piano, and the need for a new lighting system and new stage draperies has been pressing for years. The cost of upgrading the facilities totals $83,000: The Board of the Blyth Centre has now completely retired the debt from the initial building addition and renovation which was completed in 1980. The Board of Direc- tors raised almost $100,000 towards the total project cost of $320,000 over the past three years. That money came from can- vasses, dinners, raffles and the many generous donations of local residents and organizations. Several organizations have made generous pace -setting donations to the new upgrading campaign. The Richard Ivey Foundation has donated $5,000, and the London Foundation has contributed $4,000. The Blyth Centre has diverted $10,000 of operating revenue to the project, and the Ministry of Tourism and Recreation has been approached for $10,000 under their Community Recreation Centre program. Wintario has underwritten the cost of new stage draperies at $3,000, and the residents of the area have given a resounding "yes" ,of the idea of a grand piano by donating over $8,000 towards its cost. Two find -raising events are planned for the coming months to add a few more dollars to the fund. The Medieval Feast, at Memorial Hall on October 22, is a familiar event to Blyth regulars. The tickets, which are $16.50, in- clude prizes, entertainment, dinner and lots of fun. Patrons will get a chance to hear the new grand piano on November 4 at 8:30 p.m. at the Great Grand Piano Gala. Tickets will be $5 for adults and $3 for children and are available from the Myth box office. r
