Employees of the Domtar Sifto Salt mine were hosted at a reception and dinner
in Goderich Thursday to mark the official opening of the third mine shaft here.
Several company officers and executives from the Domtar head office in
Montreal toured the mine and evaporator plant facilities here. More than 800
people attended the reception and dinner at the Goderich Memorial Arena.

Couple returns from overseas
Mary Bere visited Elva Harman and Ruth
Schmidt in Stratford on Saturday. Ruth
accompanied Mary to Papua, New Guinea in
August but she stayed on to tour in Australia
and New Zealand during the month of
September and just got home last week.
Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Donald
Hartung (nee Leola Chisholm) who were
married on Saturday. The reception was held
at the Lucknow Community Center, with
dancing to the music of "Jasper".
Sympathy is extended to Bob McNeil,
Craig and Shannon, who lost a loving wife
and mother in a tragic farm accident on
'"filarsday afternoon. Mary Lou was the only
daughter of Ross and Bernice Henry to
which our sympathies are also sent. She will
be sadly missed by her five brothers. The
funeral was held Monday afternoon from the
McCallum Funeral Home, Goderich.
Dungannon United Church
Rev. Roberts preached his sermon on the
topic, "Barnabas....son of consolation". He
welcomed Margaret Pritchard as a member
of Dungannon United Church by transfer.
The sacrament of communion was observed.
The Youth Group met at Dungannon on
September 21 and elected an executive for
the coming year as follows: president,
Martha Curran; vice president, Jeff Coulter;
secretary -treasurer; Susan Curran.
Another meeting was held on September
28 at which ways and means of raising
money were discussed. It was decided to sell
tickets for which three winners could win the
services of the group for a day in January.
Tickets will be on sale from members of the
Youth Group and more information will be
forthcoming.
Brookside Broadcast

As the school year starts we have 300
students, and 44 in the kindergarten class.
We would like to welcome Mrs. Allen back
to Brookside school. She is teaching grade 1,
room 1.
On September 16, the school held the
elections for the Student's Council. Those
running for president were Brad Bale,
Michael Pentland. Ken Strong, and Donna

Raynard. Running for vice-president were
Terry Drury, Scott Gibson, Brenda Gibson
and Leisa Rau. Those nominated for secret-
ary were Debbie Debold, Kirk Livingston,
Lea Anne Livingston and Penny Moss.
Stephanie Durnin, William Ireland, Craig
Jefferson and Teresa Meriam were nomin-
ated for treasurer.
The student's council executive for this
year was elected as follows: Donna Raynard,
president; Scott Gibson, vice president;
Penny Moss, secretary and William Ireland,
treasurer.
Verna Kane, Speech Resource teacher,
visits the school on Monday to work with
some of the students to help their speech
and language.
Janet Reid, the school nurse, brought in
reinforcements to check heads throughout
the school recently. Mrs. Reid comes
regularly on Thursday afternoons.
On Tuesday, September 22 Mrs. Bere
showed slides and artifacts from her recent
trip to Australia and Papua, New Guinea,
during the month of August. Several
students took names of students in Papua.
New Guinea to write to as pen pals.
Grade 8, room 12, Mr. Cameron's class,
had hot dogs on Friday, September 9 and
also on Friday, September 30.
Miss Mathers is substituting at Brookside
Public School this week teaching Mrs.
Graham's grade 4 class while Mrs. Graham
is ill.
On September 27 Tanya Lohse brought
four baby mice to room 6. The children in
this class enjoyed having the mice.
Mrs. Carroll's class have a gerbil called
Scamp. Her class is doing a unit on Colour
this month using the Activity Box on colour

from the Board Office, and using many other
interesting ideas.
On Friday, September 23 Brookside Public
School had a Professional Development Day
at the school which the teachers used to do
long range planning and discuss curriculum.
Mrs. Graham's class is doing a Take 45 on
animals with the help of Mrs. Blake in the
library.
Intramural soccer is in progress with six
junior teams and four senior teams. They are
practicing for the tournament in Goderich on
October 4.
Dungannon 4-H

On September 26 Dungannon 02 4-H club
met at the United Church. The member's
mothers were invited to hear guest speaker
Delores Cross of Lucknow's Cut and Curl.
Each of the members and their leaders
found out what shape their face was. Delores
told what style of hair went with each face.
She gave many helpful hints on how many
'times to wash and condition your hair, also
how often to get a perm.
Afterwards lunch was served and, the
mothers had a chance to talk to Delores.

CRACKNELL
Charlie and Jackie Cracknell of Dresden are
proud to announce the birth of their first
grandchild, Justin Peter, 7 lbs. 12 oz., born
at Chatham General Hospital. Proud
parents are Deryl and Jane Cracknell,
Dresden. Nephew for Derrick Cracknell of
Chatham. First great grandchild for Harold
and Grace Cracknell of Thamesville, and
seventh great grandchild for Freeman Bas-
tien of Kingsville.
LOBB
Gordon and Paula Lobb are pleased to an-
nounce the birth of their son, Philip Andrew,
on September 14, 1983. A brother for Gina.
Proud grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Mer-
vyn Lobb, Clinton and Mrs. Norma Siebert,
Zurich. Special thanks to Dr. Hollingworth
and second floor staff.
MITCHELL
Larry and Carolyn ( nee Chowen) Mitchell,
Clinton, are pleased to announce the birth of
their daughter, Gabrielle Marie, weighing 7
lbs. 9 oz., on Monday, September 19, 1983 at
Victoria Hospital, London. Proud grand-
parents are Bill and Bev Chowen, Clinton,
and Ford and Maitie Little of Bayfield.
Great grandparents are Florence Million of
Mitchell and Florence Ludvigsen of Clinton,
and Marj Smith of Bayfield.
TOLCHARD
Andrew and Elizabeth are proud to an-
nounce the birth of their son, Geoffery John.
A brother for Robin. Born September 18,
1983 at Maple Ridge Hospital, B.C. Proud
grandparents are Evelyn and Jack Seaman
of Goderich and Beryl and Geoff Toichard of
Somerset, England.
Watch for
grad edition
The annual commencement and
graduation exercises were held at Goderich
District Collegiate Institute this past Friday
evening. Proud parents and relatives filled
the school's auditorium to watch graduating
students receive their diplomas. Over 30
special awards were also handed out and
Ron Vanderlinde gave the valedictory
address for the Class of '83.
Next week, the Signal -Star will carry a
souvenir edition for the graduates as a
supplement to its regular edition. It will
feature pictures of all the graduates plus the
award winners and a copy of the valedictory
address.
