LOOKING
BACK
The Goderich Industrial
Exhibition opened its doors
'to the public on Tuesday
night. On account of the
dashing of ow show and the
Laurier
meeting
inClinton,
there were those who said
there would not
be a decent
exhibit, as people would
think it useless to enter; but
those who attended the first
evening had to admit that the
entries of fruit, vegetables,
flowers, butter, homemade
bread, and cakes and
preserves were larger in
numbers than usual and of
excellent quality.
The fire department was
called out about 5 o'clock
Saturday morning by the
burning of a barn belonging
to Mr. Arthur Cantelon,
Lighthouse Street. The fire is
supposed to have originated
from fumigating which had
been carried out the evening
before and burned so fiercely
that a number of
hens, a
u nti
q a ty of hay and other
articles were all destroyed.
The band of the 33rd
Regiment played a nice
program on the Square on
Monday evening, the last of
the season's concerts.
The building at one time
occupied by Smith Brothers
and the Jackson Manufac-
turing Company has been
leased for a term and will
shortly p
be opened
as a
factory for the manufacture
of much needed articles of
household furniture.
Miss Margaret Watson of
Goderich won a new car this
week, the top prize in a
contest sponsored by the
Ellis Hosiery Company.
The latest addition to the
commercial fishing fleet at
Goderich is the 33 -foot
gasoline boat which Peter
and Angus MacDonald
purchased at Midland.
The Reverend W.J. Patton
of Benmiller is appealing to
district residents to con-
tribute fruits and vegetables
to make up a carload to be
shipped to distressed
residents of the Prairie
Provinces where crop
failures have been caused by
drought, grasshoppers and
hail. Mrs. Herbert Morris of
Colborne Township is
collecting clothing to be
shipped to needy people in
Saskatchewan.
Several general con-
tractors have been invited to
submit tenders for the
construction of the new F.W.
Woolworth Company store
on the Square with a
deadline of Monday, Sep-
tember 29 set for the receipt
of tenders. While no official
statement has been made, it
is believed that work on the
new store, which will run
into more than a quarter of a
million dollars with fixtures,
etc. will get underway some
time this fall.
Goderich Police Com-
mission feels that a sixth
man should be added to the
town police force it was
learned Friday by town
council.
Despite strong opposition
from Reeve James Donnelly,
chairman of the fiannce
committee, town council
voted 4-3 Friday to hold a tax
sale.
A bank note representing
the final payment on the new
Knox Presbyterian Church
was burned in a special
ceremony Sunday morning.
Goderich Town Council
unanimously agreed in a
recorded vote to accept a
tender price of $749,656.53 for
contruction work on the
widening of Highway 21.
The doctors of the com-
munity are actively sear-
ching for help—more doctors
who will come to Goderich
and area to alleviate the
severe shortage of family
physicians in the com-
munity.
Construction on the
Goderich grandstand was
expected to resume this
week after a compromise
was reached between
Schiedel Construction
Company and the Goderich
Sports Committee. The
Sports Committee will pay
$41,000 of the estimated
$60,000 repair costs of the
grandstand.
